Do you have a mask applied to the layer? It sounds like maybe a mask vertex and the anchor point are in the same place? Maybe??

As for the velocities… I’m not an expert.
But have you tried separating the position dimensions (right click on position, choose “Separate Dimensions) to make them controllable in the graph editor?

November 11, 2015 at 1:01 am in reply to: Creating Wave Interference Using After EffectsYes, I actually tried it after writing the post, and I see that creating either the constructive OR destructive effect is easy with the radio waves effect, but getting them both to show up is a little more involved.
Definitely read up on displacement maps.

November 10, 2015 at 10:34 pm in reply to: Creating Wave Interference Using After EffectsOne possibility:
Two copies of a solid with the radio waves effect, both laid over a blue solid, will create a similar interference effect. Use color dodge or multiply blending mode and slap some blur on it.
It doesn’t look like real water, but it would illustrate the concept.

November 10, 2015 at 10:21 pm in reply to: Shot setup advice for Mocha AE planar track of white card, tracking markersI have used Mocha to replace one photo in a frame with another, and it was able to track the photo to absurd levels of blur and parallax. I was grimly prepared to do a lot of keyframing, and Mocha just tracked it almost perfectly the first time through. (Of course, it probably wasn’t as difficult a track as you’re describing, but still…)
I think if you have a dark edge on the card and a good distinct pattern–grid with X’s in the corners, for instance, you should get pretty good results.
But yeah, I wouldn’t recommend white on white.

Strange that the wiggling happens after the cup stops moving. Is the pouring coffee within your tracking region?
But more simply… Can you not simply delete the keyframes after the cup stops?

This may not be the problem, but be certain you got the frame rate in the Mocha track set exactly the same as the AE footage. I’ve had 24 vs. 23.976 mess me up in the past.

August 28, 2015 at 7:32 pm in reply to: Giving a layer the impression of momentum/inertiaGetting that feel is all about using the graph editor. I’ve found this simulator pretty useful in translating motion into the shape of the curve that produces it.

You can do that with the Fractal Noise effect and some layering and tweaking. This Video Copilot tutorial on how to make shockwaves lays out the process pretty well.

July 16, 2015 at 9:11 pm in reply to: Make a person’s hair messy in a unsteady shaky footageI doubt you are going to get the effect you want by distorting the image.
You might find an image of a person with properly messy hair, cut out the hair in Photoshop, then overlay the new hair over the person’s actual hair.
You could then use the point tracker to track a couple of points on the face (eyeballs?) and use that information to parent the new hair to the face. If there is not a lot of head-turning, that might work fairly well. It isn’t like this is going to fool anybody, but if you were fooling around with mesh warps I assume you don’t expect this effect to be hyper-realistic…
