    Thanks for all the feedback – very helpful as usual…so wanting to keep my ALP5’s and understanding that monitors aren’t meant to “color” the sound – still, how can I liven up the overall sound on these ALP’s re: bass and treble – I know it’s a bit dodgy adding to the mix of these speakers, but, man, they’re really dull – all mid-range almost exclusively…what can I do – add a subwoofer and tweeter?

    Thanks Lee – very helpful…so in a nutshell, one could/should export an HDV seq using ProRes 422 HQ 60i, 1920×1080, then take that QT file and import that into Compressor – good results – correct?

    This sounds good in principle – so if I’ve edited on a DVcam NTSC seq timeline, I can simply export that timeline and choose uncompressed 8-bit NTSC 48KHz codec in the QT mov export settings box and I’ve got a better (re: text and graphics only) looking video for export than had I chosen “current settings”?

    So how would one do this scenario for export to Compressor? Wouldn’t we have to copy/paste HDV (or DV) timeline to an uncompressed 8-bit timeline? (I’m using FCP 5.1.4.)

    Very helpful, thanks for the advice – I did as you said, I see how that works now…I also tried this: selected eyedropper under whites, chose area of pic that should be white, clicked on it, it rightly made a good adjustment, chose eyedropper under Blacks, clicked black on pic, it made a good adjustment, then I took down the whites (getting a good single check mark, no plus sign), l payed with the balck slider and the mid slightly, it now looks good – and only one instance of the 3 way CC.

    So question is are these just 2 ways to do the same thing, or did I do something that’s less acceptable/less correct than adding 2 instances of the same filter?

    Also, when timeline is playing, on the FCP 5.1.4 waveform tool my Blacks are dipping around -3 and whites are slightly higher (though still legal) than when parked on any frame – is this a concern?

    Sounds too simple, and I just tried it, but what happens is this – I take down the whites and add a tiny to the mids, everything’s legal…then I click on eye dropper right side of Limit effect, click it on person’s face – it takes the whole shot back up to warning icon and gives zebra stripes, while leaving my whites/mids sliders where they are, after I adjusted them. I’m trying to take down the whites (legal) and also I want to ONLY affect the skin tone after the rest of the shot is legal…what am I doing wrong?

    Thanks for the advice, I wouldn’t have known to do that, appreciated…can’t believe doing something so common and necessary as “slo-mo” is so hit and miss in FCP!

    Just got FCP Studio upgrade today, but still have to get a mac pro, so won’t be able to use Motion for a few weeks (currently editing on a G4 powerbook 1GHZ, 1 GB RAM only)…FCP slo mo is really not effective…but when I can I’ll try Motion.
