Makes sense. The project I’m working on will be replicated as we’re making 5000 copies straight off the bat.

We’re not doing dual layer, but do you have another compression software to recommend outside Compressor & Adobe Media Encoder?

We’re already shooting in HD 1080i DVCPro.

    Thank you!

Automatic Duck is a nice plugin that will translate all your effects, keyframes, cuts, fades, etc from FCP > AE.

Other than that – I would recommend doing the edit first in FCP. Get your content & audio set in stone. Then take it into AE. If you start doing heavy graphics, then your music or content changes – you’ve wasted time. I’ve had that happen and it’s not fun 🙂

[David Roth Weiss] “the movies you buy on DVD are replicated (stamped not burned) on dual layer DVD 10s, which hold twice the amount of content of your burned DVD 5s.”

I’ve never heard of “stamping.” Could you tell me more about this? I’m currently using FCP, Compressor, & DVDSP as well. I get a clear image on my SD CRT monitors, but when I play back the DVD fullscreen on the Mac I burned it on with 23″ Cinema Displays it looks horrible – like SD being blown up to HD.

This issue would make sense to me, except that when I rent an SD DVD from Blockbuster it looks great even on the Cinema Displays.

    Thanks a ton!

The best solution I’ve come across is using MPEG Streamclip (free software) to transcode or rip from DVD into “Apple Motion JPEG A” It doesn’t match any other codec, but it comes in the clearest, and if needed you can use Compressor to transcode it to the codec you need.

I am having this same problem with the DV NTSC codec in FCP. When I capture from DVCam Tape it even comes out fuzzy – or when I rip a DVD into DV NTSC it is fuzzy in QT & FCP. Even downgrading from HD into SD inside FCP gives a fuzzier image.

It’s very odd. Any other thoughts?

    Thank you!
