  • I was actually going to ask a similar question-but you beat me to it!

I have access to a Samson wireless mic system, which is great, but its a lot to worry about on my own. The few times I’ve used it, it seemed a bit much to worry about that AND the video. I can’t afford an assistant currently, so I was thinking about buying a powerful shotgun mic instead.

The Sennheiser MKE300, or the Rode VideoMic, both look like high-quality on-camera shotguns. Am I insane for thinking this? Is a powerful shotgun going to do the job? I know a wireless system is ideal, but a good on-board shotgun mic cuts down on a lot of variables-

    What do you guys think?

    Thanks-

    Much thanks-

It looks like I have that command in CS1, so I’m going to give it a shot tonight-

I guess a new main hard drive could be the way to go-how much work is the transfer over from the old hard drive? I’ve always stayed away from replacing it, assuming the process is probably time-consuming and complicated. But more space would be nice, and internal hard drives are pretty cheap.

You don’t think the right software could defragment the drive correctly? Did you try with yours, or did it just crash on you?

    Thanks-

In terms of the audio-can’t you hook up the audio to the TV? Or does it have to come out of the speakers hooked into the computer-then just the video comes out of the TV?

I guess a camera is the way to go. I’m just curious how this other guy hooked the TV up directly. I guess the quality wasn’t that bad-but then again, I need to see it to know for sure.

Yeah, I think a scan converter might not be worth it-especially if the quality will be really bad. I don’t mind just viewing it through the tiny window in the program-but my client, along with people he wants to show it to, really need a bigger sized viewing area to get the full effect (and to keep them interested). I’m perfectly happy without it-although it is nice to have.

    Thanks again-

    Thanks for the info guys-

I’d rather not spend any money on a canobus device, so I’ll probably opt for the camera. Although if this guy wants to show other people the movie on the TV bad enough, maybe he’ll spend the cash. It is only a Avid DV system, but I’m going to check the inputs on the back of the computer again.

This guy says he had someone else hook a TV directly to the computer before, but didn’t know how. I didn’t think I saw any S-Video inputs-but I’ll check again. If there is a S-Video input, what would the audio plug into?

    Thanks-

I knew I was going to have to deal with some “stupid question” comments- 🙂

But using my deck would be a huge pain in the ass. I’m editing it at his house, and I need the deck for my system, so I’d have to bring it with me every time. Not to mention that my desk is a complete mess, so I literally have piles of stuff on top of the deck. Also, he wants to be able to show it on the TV to other people when I’m not there.

I guess thats the last resort-but there must be a simpler way, right?

    Thanks guys-

Yeah, I actually found a work-around by exporting within FCP using Compressor (‘Export with Compressor’ option). I had never tried this, but it actually worked. I’ll have to check how much space is free-its a 80 GB drive, and I think I have like 4 gigs available, so I should try to free up more space.

I have repaired my permissions many times on my main drive, and every time I do it, it still finds errors. It says it fixes it each time, but it keeps coming up. Like I said, my main drive is pretty scattered. Any good programs to defragment it?

    Thanks-

I ran the hardware diagnostic I received with the computer, and the hardware passed fine. So it must be a software problem, and more specifically, a volume structure problem. The Tech Tools program I ran crashed at the “Volume structure analyzing” step both times.

So I ask again-how do you defrag and analyze a drive that doesn’t want to be touched? How is the drive making the diagnostic programs crash?

    Thanks again for any help-

Also- I’ve been noticing more dropped frames in playback. Could this possibly be related?

    Thanks Bogiesan.

I tried to run the TechTools (3.0.2) diagnostic I received when I got the Apple protection plan, but it crashed twice! And to think of it, I had tried to degrag my main drive (iDefrag 1.0.5), and it had crashed then too. I think my main drive is pretty scattered, but if I can’t get the diagnostic or defrag to work, how do I fix it? Also-I’m trying to export the MPEG-2 to my external firewire drive, NOT my main drive. SO would the main drive affect it, or would the drive that the file is being exported to affect it?

Also-I am going to finish editing my other wedding, and export that. That will prove whether its just the particular wedding I’ve been trying to export, or whether its something else. Fingers crossed….

It probably isn’t Little Snitch-but Snitch had actually crashed my computer a couple times-once when I was transferring music to my iPod, and once when I was rendering something. But it shouldn’t be popping up at all anymore, so that shouldn’t be a problem.

Anyway, are there better diagnostics I should try to get? I mean, if a system doesn’t like to be diagnosed, will it do the same thing to any diagnostic software?

    Thanks-
