Okay. One last guess. Any chance you are hooked up to a Time Capsule or any other disk that is performing Time Machine backups? FCP hangs and will eventually crash on me all the time if I have my Time Capsule turned on. I have to remember to turn it on and off depending on the type of work I am doing.

My last guess: Did you install any of the old internal PCI cards from your old G5 into your new Mac Pro?

I would run Apple Hardware Test and have it test all of your RAM. Apple Hardware Test is located on one of the system disks that came with the computer. Since you have 16GB of RAM it will take several hours to run, so set it up to run overnight. AHT will test each stick of RAM and will tell you if one of them has a problem.

Since it is a “brand new system” my guess is that you got some bad RAM in there somewhere. Did you run Apple Hardware Test and test all of the RAM?

Have you tried capturing using the AJA VTR Xchange application? What kind of results do you get with it?
I don’t have an AJA card. I have a Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme and a Sony HVR-1500. My experience has been that FCP will not capture HDV clips reliably. On the other hand, the Blackmagic Media Express application and Adobe Premiere will both capture HDV perfectly, 100% of the time.
Oddly enough, FCP will capture Mini-DV and DVCAM perfectly, 100% of the time.

A dual-layer DVD will allow you to increase your video quality bit rate. I shoot for using something close to 7.8 mbps. Scaling is the key when making an SD-DVD from and HD timeline. Make sure that your setting in Compressor has the Frame Controls “On” and the Resize Filter to “Best”. Output fields should be “Same as source”.

Are you using Final Cut Pro? My deck isn’t a JVC, but I have a Sony HVR-1500 HDV deck and it won’t capture reliably to FCP via either firewire or HD-SDI/RS422. On the other hand, it will capture perfectly to Premiere every time, 100% of the time.

If you are using HD-SDI and RS-422 you need to use “Edit to tape”. “Print to Video” is for firewire.

I had a similar problem about ten years ago with a Sony PVW-2800. The deck kept making a “static” or “pop” sound that would intermittently appear during playback or recording. We tried replacing the audio board but that did not fix the problem. We ended up renting another PVW-2800 and proceeded to swap out all the other boards one at a time. Amazingly, the problem was with the TBC board. The TBC board doesn’t really have anything to do with the audio. We ordered a new TBC board and we never had the problem again. All I am saying is – it could be a faulty component that has nothing to do with the audio signal.
