I’m in the same boat. FACT: 95% of my consumer clients want DVDs and BDs. They want something physical in their hands. Even if its a digital copy on a flash drive.
I’m just starting in FCP X coming from Sony Vegas. Vegas came with DVDA and was easy to make customized menus with chapter stops etc. I even use Encore CS6 for more upscale DVDs and BDs. FCP X has nothing in the way of DVD creation that I would give to a client. So I too need a good solution for creating great looking DVD menus etc.

Thanks for all the feedback. Vegas is a dead end product as is Premiere CS6… unless you want to venture into a paid subscription for CC.

I’m not saying Sony Vegas is a dead NLE. I’ve been using Vegas since V8 and will continue to use V12 (V13 has too many problems for me) for the time being. I’ve seen the same situations and developments from other NLE manufactures that I’ve used in my 33 years of video production. Then they start to develop a different looking product that does the same or similar tasks and but includes new trends (4K in this case) you have to start questioning the existing software. Why have 2 NLE’s from the same company.
In the last case, they stopped producing any new updates or fixes that would include HD production and soon provided only limited support, while they put all their design efforts into the newer, more diverse, robust product which they could charge a lot more for. I saw the light and started looking for a new NLE. I found Vegas. Loved it. Still do. That old NLE is still around but only a small handful for people use it.
I can read between the lines and have enough insight to know we won’t see a Vegas Pro14. But you will see Catalyst develop and become Sony’s new main NLE for the future. (I think they took Vegas as far as they could and found with 4K coming into play they would have to rebuild Vegas from the ground up so instead, just started developing an entirely new software package(s).)
I will continue to use Vegas until it can no longer do what I need it to do. Just as I do with everything Adobe CS6 has to offer. But I will never go into a subscription deal.

Since my Vegas 13’s render engine only works about 30% of the time, I’ll be sticking with V12 and start looking into FCP X and Catalyst (if it shows any promise). Both have free demo versions. So as long as V12 can serve my needs…. but it’s days are numbered.
