* sigh *
Thanks for the reply, Ron. Guess I’ll have to settle for the digital version this time around. It’s just a lot harder to recline on the couch with a laptop. 🙂

I should be a little more specific in what I’m looking for, I guess. I’m looking for productions that used Illustrator/Photoshop for designing and generating elements (character parts, background elements, etc.) and After Effects for animation and compositing.
I’ll take shows that used Flash, too.

That’s what the Start property is for. At 100%, there’s no stroke. At 0% the stroke stretches from one end of the path to the other. See the tutorial for more details. Or, look up the Stroke effect in the manual or online.

Did this recently. Very easy for a basic pen stroke.
1) Use the pen tool to draw a path around the part of the image you want circled.
2) Apply the Stroke effect and adjust the color, brush hardness, brush size, etc. to taste. Make sure “Paint Style” is set to “On Original Image.”
3) Go to the time where you want the pen stroke to start. Set the Start property to 100% and apply a keyframe.
4) Go to the time where you want the pen stroke to finish. Set the Start property to 0%.Now if you want more detail in the pen stroke, I would suggest going through Aharon Rabinowitz’s tutorial on animating signatures. The same techniques introduced in the tutorial should help with what you’re doing.

Shooting in HDV? Capture the HDV footage and then convert that footage to ProRes 422 using Media Manager or Batch Export in FCP.
Here’s a great article on when to convert to another codec from the native codec.

One thing I’d like to add is that if there is going to be some heavy compositing, chromo keying, color correcting, etc., then I suggest you convert your footage from DV to ProRes 422 before doing your work in After Effects. Your footage won’t look any better than DV, but ProRes 422’s larger color space should produce better results for the large amount of post work you’re doing. I’ve done a lot of heavy post work (keying, color correcting, VFX) with ProRes 422 in After Effects CS3 and haven’t noticed any issues.
Also, if you are not going back to FCP, export a digital master out of After Effects by rendering an image sequence (TIF format using LZW compression). Then, create your MPEG-2 encoded video for DVD from that. Or any other output format required.
If you are returning to FCP, then render a video with the Animation codec. That’s what I usually do.

Aharon Rabinowitz has a great 2-part tutorial on animating a signature.

February 15, 2008 at 3:01 pm in reply to: HDV Feature Film on Color Correction ( I hate Apple Color)I can’t really comment on color correcting HDV footage with Color since I’ve never done it. Perhaps sticking with HDV would be better.
But I do know that if you want to color correct using After Effects, you will want to use another codec like ProRes422. Otherwise, you will be looking at horrendously long render times for your final export.
