  • Thanks for your validation of the ridiculousness, and for explaining the techniques you’ve used successfully.

I tried a new sequence with tracks in stereo — they didn’t offer plain stereo, that option was grayed out, so I tried stereo submix and other options provided. The new voice track I recorded was still in mono.

Another attempt was to copy and paste attributes but this doesn’t give the option of copying the track settings.

The only thing that works for me is to right click on the track in the project panel and change audio tracks in the way shown in the attached screen shot. It offers a promise to apply the settings to future audio clips in the sequence but this does not hold up.

I’m not sure how to save preset as you advised because the only way I know to do that is from the effect control panel which offers other audio modifications but not the track configuration. So for now at least I manually modify each voice track laid down. Oy.

My love-hate relationship with PP continues! 🙂

You don’t need a mixer if you have a decent field recorder. I’ve used a Zoom h4N and a boom or lav mic and it’s fine. You may be able to attach the recorder directly to the camera using the XLR inputs in which case it’ll be native to the clip. I like contingency plans, so often I’ll use the on-camera mic plus a separate recorder to have two audios, and it’s easy to sync the two in post with a slate (or clap). You want to sync audio in all the clips you intend to use and delete the on camera track, then once you start editing you’re all set with sound.

Thanks, will look into that course, have taken Lynda but it’s been piecemeal.

Update — I’m leaning toward a Sony a7 to keep use of the lenses I have although I’ll needed a dedicated one to use with this camera to take advantage of the full frame sensor. It sounds like the menus are easier to navigate for vids than those of the Canon, also the mirrorless is lighter weight.

Great tips Tim and Ann, thanks.

Greg, you’re a diplomat. 🙂 Think what I need is to keep progressing in PP maybe in a more systematic way, e.g. return to Lynda.com, or maybe take an intermedia course through college extension to provide a structured learning environment. When I do random searches there’s a large amount of tutorials on Youtube, but most are for past versions so obsolete which is not efficient.

Have you used the loop function? Here’s a vid that explains it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69Jn1QWadRw

You’ll have to hit pause because a looped section keeps replaying until you intervene.

I’m not sure you can perform the operation exactly as you describe in SV, perhaps someone else knows of a way.

Thank you for this thoughtful discussion, points well taken. Good to understand why the constant changes, e.g. new codecs. And that other NLE is similarly evolving and buggy.

This phenom of ever-changing technology is happening more broadly — e.g. I often squander time (it feels like squandering) getting along with new versions of Mac OS, and trying to get upgraded Safari or Chrome to play nicely with web sites. Many of these are to make my internet secure and private, which I need… and Apple is generous with their tech support. It’s just the time, oy!

My challenge hasn’t been in file size or speed. So far my projects are shorts in HD, not even 4K. Last bug that had me cursing the computer was, cross-dissolve would work at some transitions and not at others. I had a screen share with a PP rep and THEY couldn’t figure it out. Finally I found a workaround, can’t recall what. I suppose most editors charge this time but I’d feel uncomfortable doing this esp. with such a basic function.

Bret, the FB group looks terrific and I’m in, thank you for this!

As to MC, most I know who’ve tried it said it was arduous to learn and the capacity is not greater than FCP or PP. Think they’ve not used it for a group editing. I do know one person who learned it with relative ease, but he’s got an unusually high technical aptitude. I’m more intuitive so for now I’ll stick with PP. Probably get a different answer on different forums!
