As I see it that is practically the same as time remapping, so that might be the more straightforward solution.

I would say scaling down the map so that the desired image fits within the artboard would be the easier solution.

The latter would be more like this. Various contrast sharpening enhancements applied.

Should really start with RAW image in either case to amount to anything decent, so these are more conceptual examples than actual results.

I call it bad photo retouching. But is does give a nice and synthetic rubber-face effect if that’s what you’re after.

There’s another (photographic) look that could be considered “hyperrealistic” which is bringing out extreme detail that you don’t usually see. You see that in photos — usually of men — where every single pore on their face is showing extremely clearly. Though I haven’t actually heard the term being used in relation to photography or video, rather to describe paintings that have level of detail (apparently) exceeding a photograph.

Here’s an attempt in that direction in Photoshop. The render looked suspiciously like Anna Faris, so I found an (unretouched) photo of her and used some bad photo retouching methods to get some of the human realism out of her, so that she would look more synthetic. Overdo the noise reduction in the skin, unsharp mask to bring out unrealistic amount of edge clarity elsewhere, use shadows and highlights to add some HDR-style lighting, make the colors a bit unnaturalistic and then overdo the white in her hair to take it outside the believable range. All filter-based, no manual retouching involved. So that’s one possible approach. Before and after for comparison.

  • The poor man’s “image hose” in Photoshop is to clone from a hidden transparent layer that has your source image, with “aligned” turned off in the clone brush options. You essentially get one copy of the source image centered on the brush each time you click (as long as the brush is larger than the source image). Not that exciting, but you can at least get fully colored images placed en masse pretty easily this way.

  • Corel Painter is way better for natural media painting. Well, I guess you knew that since that’s where I know image hose from…

But I just saw this for the first time: https://www.painterartist.com/en/product/particleshop/

It claims to be Painter brushes working inside Photoshop. Although it appears that you may have to purchase new brush packs separately.

How about using a position-keyframed 3D null object for the point of interest, pick-whipping the camera POI to it?

Do you mean that they should look like a realistic synthetic character like that 3D render?

Definitely 3D initially. 2D effects in AE on top to make it look more like a drawn/painted image. Could be almost any 3D package, Maya included.
