On the theory level of things, you need to use the sections as track mattes for the actual images. The images need to scale proportionally, using the larger of the scale factors (x or y) of the corresponding matte layers. Then they also need to be centered on the matte so that they fill properly. That’s the concept, let me know how far you get with that.

  • Sounds like a sourceRectAtTime() matter. If it is a linear horizontal wipe, you would need to know the left and right edges of the text block –which you can get with sourceRectAtTime() — and adjust the completion settings 0-100 so that the range gets mapped to the area of the text block. What you need is the left and right edges as a percentage of the screen width. If you’re going from left to right, the screen left edge is 0 and the right edge is 100. The left edge of the text layer is X1 (percent) and the right edge is X2 (percent). You need to remap the completion 0 to 100 to this X1 to X2 range with the linear() expression.

(Line) Return and Enter are two different keys on the keyboard with two different functions. The Line Return key gives you a new text line while the Enter key applies the settings (and often closes the dialog as well).

The quick selection tool is quite handy for this purpose, you can select similar adjacent areas of the image by dragging over them and then remove from selection with the same tool by pressing the alt key. The refine edge (called something else in the recent versions) can be used to modify the edge of the selection so it isn’t just a sharp edge. Then I would use levels or curves adjustment layer (rather than cutting or filling on the layer itself) to make the selected area white. That way you can keep adjusting the selection non-destructively by painting on the layer mask.

  • Here are two articles from the Adobe site that cover Photoshop performance settings and GPU performance FAQs:

  • Yes, would be fun to see the final result.

By the way, the recent versions of AE have the option, in many cases, to include “masks and effects” instead of just the source of the layer, which obviates having to precompose with effects for such things. I’m not sure if it is available for every effect, haven’t investigated the matter that thoroughly.

  • Yes, but are the effects inside the precomp or applied to the precomp?

    Should be the former.

I see from the screenshot that some effect has been applied to the precomp, but the image cuts off so I don’t know what it is.

  • This is a bit of a guess, but did you pre-comp the layer used for time displacement? If not, you should, otherwise AE reads the layer without the effects applied to it.

Grab a still image from some point where the paper is already torn but not all the way to the edges, and a still from the end state. Use former to extend the latter in Photoshop so you have an extended background still image. Drop this behind your footage and mask off with a feathered edge. You may want to add some animated noise to the output on the extended background layer if the difference between the video and the still is visible from lack of grain.
