Right…I read that, but that doesn’t explicitly explain what they do with the files, whether they re-encode or not. Is the higher bit rate for people with an audience that will view the files over enterprise connections, or just those who are able to upload such large files?

Using MPEG streamclip, I’m also limited to a basic quality slider, so understanding whether a large file (which presumably is higher bitrate) will affect playback is really important for me.

Basically, what I’m asking is: what does the suggested bitrate mean, and how does bitrate really affect youtube playback?

With the volume of work I do that’s not really a tenable workflow. I get a lot of half-complete projects from people, and so I’m reconnecting on almost a daily basis. I’ll then receive an updated project, and have to reconnect midstream.

I think there must be bugs with my install…there are some other funny behaviors going on that I’ve never seen in FCP before (QTRef files keep getting disconnected from their media, and multiclips lose their media frequently as well….sometimes I’ll have a clip in the timeline that will show as unrendered even in unlimited RT, and even when it’s gray in the render bar).

It’s all prores 422 LT footage. Unfortunately I couldn’t use Media Manager because my drive got corrupted and had to be wiped. I was given the footage already transcoded so can’t batch capture.

Anyway, this behavior doesn’t happen on my other machine (which runs Snow Leopard) so something is clearly wrong.

Another nebulous reconnection issue:
I’m having some issues reconnecting files contained within a multiclip. Though they are properly reconnected in the Media Browser/library, sections of the multiclip show as unrendered on a properly set-up unlimited RT timeline. Upon double-click to open in viewer, only the current camera angle is online (all others offline). So, I right click the clip to reconnect, go to the file, highlight it, click “choose” and get the message that the “reel” attribute has changed. I can’t think of why that would possibly happen. The files do reconnect, but I find it strange that I have to do this in the individual sequence after it is already connected properly in the browser.

Any thoughts on THIS?

Good call about the client monitor (I am working on a dual monitor system). Thanks for that one.

So, I’ve TEDIOUSLY spent the entire day comparing every sort of export I could, and I’ve compiled them below. After AMAing, I changed the source files to the 0-255 setting and then transcoded to DNxHD 115 (hence the “expand tra” text). All vids had FFs with other import and transcode methods, but I thought I’d start with this (I think it will give adequate results).

I compared:
converted to h264 and x264 in Mpeg Streamclip – QTref 709, QTref 709 Avid codecs, QTref RGB, QTref RGB Avid codecs
AVID h264 709, AVID h264 RGB
AVID x264 709, AVID x264 RGB .

All files were viewed in QT 10 (I’ve found it does an adequate job predicting youtube) and compared to the AVID viewer. I looked at her face color, hair color, vest darkness/detail, and railing color.

All the matters to me here is perceived accuracy–so no concern about scopes and things. My favorite? AVID x264 709, though it desaturates a touch and lightens the blacks a smidge. What do you guys think?

Oh, and: I recently switched to AVID from FCP(7 & X). Do those suites not have this issue at all, or is it partly/mostly an h.264 problem? Would I be wise to reconsider Apple?
