Thank you SO MUCH for that response, David! So much detail. Was JUST what I needed. You are correct in that I’m not looking for critical color–just a something for ballpark work, largely intended for web streaming. Also, I have access to other monitors that I can check against intermittently. The size point is well-taken. I’ll definitely consider a larger screen, if I can just find a place to mount it in my studio!

Pretty harsh words, Ben…I get your point, but grading isn’t all or nothing. There is definitely a continuum of value, as I’ve learned by previously doing most of my work on computer displays.

How are you importing the footage? My plan is to bring them in through FCP7’s L+T as 422 HQ, then trying the key in FCPX and AE to compare results. I assume there is no value to going to 4444 because I’m recording in 4:2:2 and only 10-bit depth, anyway, right?

And, along the same lines: some stations ask for interlaced, but some don’t. I can’t seem to figure out if my original footage is interlaced or not. This is what get info in QT and Streamclip yield:
“Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), 1920 × 1080, 23.976 fps, 173.73 Mbps”

Should my Compressor settings include a “reinterlacing” or something like that?

Ah that makes sense! Thanks for pointing that out. Any thoughts on the whole noise-reduction issue? I suppose it shouldn’t be drastically important if I light things right, so I should probably avoid the whole 3DNR setting?

That’s what I’ve assumed would be the only problem, but:
I’ve tested my hardware pretty heavily. Run memtest on both sticks of RAM, and even tried with only one in at a time–doesn’t fix the problem for either.
I’ve just erased my startup disk and reinstalled FCP–problem still occurs. I’m pretty stumped on this one. Any other thoughts at all? In general I find FCP much buggier on this machine (little graphical issues, straight lines go jagged in the viewer when keyframing sometimes). This is my main machine and it’s driving me bonkers!
