Job: I’ve read a ton around the web about how bad qt h.264 is…just trying to find a workaround that I can afford (so, squeeze and main concept are out).

Michael: thanks so much. This is the detail I need! My question, though: I understand that I can set my source type upon AMA (which I’d almost definitely do as 0-255), but…what about on the transcode? My computer isn’t powerful enough to edit the AMA linked h.264s without some serious stutter.

on color correct: So, basically I should be trusting the vectorscope more than the image I’m seeing on screen? So I will actually be GOING for a more washed-out image than I seek upon export?

If what I’m reading is correct, then I should be doing a 709 export to a QT reference, and then converting that in an external converter (qt7, mpeg streamclip)? I’ll give the x264 a shot tonight (great tip, thanks)….but I suppose I’m not seeing where this workflow alters what I’ve already done–I guess the devil is in the AMA and the transcode moment?

Yeah, I actually started and went all the way through AVID’s own resources. I’d love to take a class, but I don’t have enough flexibility at my job or any real money to spare. I will definitely check out that book though, thanks!

Ah! That’s kind of what I figured. I’m entirely happy doing all of my organization inside AVID. As long as I know my camOriginals and project folders are backed up, I think I’ll feel organized working that way.

Do you have any recommendations for more advanced AVID tutorials? I feel like I understand the software well enough–I’d just like a companion of sorts to get my workflow sped up.

Thanks again, Chris…but is there any way I could get an explanation of what the 1080i wrapping actually means? I need to be able to teach and explain this stuff to students and faculty. Is there perhaps a forum/article/tutorial that you know of??

FCP’s 3-way CC is REALLY simple to white balance with, esp if you use the eye dropper to pick whites and blacks. I haven’t had a ton of luck with the auto white balancer, though, so it might be cool to see a good one.

Anyone have any opinions on that?

Thanks Chris! I’m not sure what you mean when you say that my progressive is wrapped in an interlaced stream. Aren’t editing monitors usually capable of displaying full 1080p? Since field dominance is grayed out in sequence settings, doesn’t that mean I’m operating in progressive?

Finally, should I NOT use the HDTV setting? Should I do custom for the frame size and just type in 1920×1080?

Ha, wow, no idea why I wrote “shane”…definitely meant “chance.” I must have been watching one of Shane’s tutorials!

Hmm…I’ve raised the blacks (I’m trying to get the lighter image with the rosier color). It’s really not having the effect that I want at all, though. You’ll notice that not only is this an exposure issue, but those two main colors (the rose/orange on the left and the blue on the right) are significantly different–even different hues, I think.

In terms of seeing more of the footage…it’s all just this same shot, with those two people moving around. So, the lighting and coloring don’t change at all.
