GO BACK to 6.5.1 or 2 and OS X.3.4. I was in FCP 4.5, upgraded to os 10.3.9, all was ok till I went up to QT 7 pro (bought it because pro capability in 6.5 disappeared after going to Os 10.3.9) HORRIBLE problems for a month (stuff seeming to work then going haywire in timelines). Strip out with patch from apple site didnt work, we did a reinstall of oS 10.3.4 and QT 6.5 and FCP 4.5. Sorry cant give details, as someone helped me do it I just chomped fingernails.

I never use those keys, but was having a stutter problem while playing backwards & other probs: it was QT7 pro. Had to go back to 6.5.2, the remove & patch didn’t work, had to strip out 7, and Osx.3.9 AND FCP4.5 and re-enter them all (up to QT6.5 and os 3.4), ie go back to where I was several months ago before upgrades. AND I needed professional help.
Seems ok, but test is tomorrow when boss starts editing

Hi, the render took a while but worked fine. We have a g4 single processor, so the realtime thing doesnt seem to work (at least not in the timeline, must render). Thanks for advice.

    Thanks Shane. Good advice.
I re-exported the timeline as a Quicktime movie tonight & it was 7.5 gig(down from 8) and took 10 min not 1 1/2 hrs. I will try to burn a dvd later.

I did mixdown the audio & am trying to go from the timeline to vhs with mixdown audio now, “print to video”, was having evil trouble with that recently (freezeups).

I’ve never used idvd, but Toast balked at an 8gig Quictime movie file which is whay I tried compressor. will try compressor again after reading the manual more slowly! thanks again. J.

Shane, Thanks for reply, in my original attempt when I saw gthe self-contained QT was 8gig I used Compressor, but despite reading the manual found it oblique. So I ended up with a nice small video file, but no sound. Compressed that after then burned them to dvd with Toast. video ok, sound disn’t come along for the ride. A clearer version of my question is, I guess:

    a) is it legit that exporting a 38 min timeline to self contained QT (uncomprssed) takes 1 3/4 hours or so? or have I set something wrong?

    b) sould I mixdown the audio before doing this? would that help?

    c) is it legit that comprssing 8 gig self-contained QT take about 1 1/2 hrs? or have I set something wrong?

    d) from other advice you’ve given (forgive me if I ask the same question several ways) you point out mpeg 2 as the best way to go for conventional dvd. I tried mpeg 1 because the image size is smaller so I thought it might encode faster & burn to dvd quicker, and it was a ruff cut only. Compressor Manual also said conventional dvd players have the ability to playback mpeg1.

In your experience, is compressing to mpeg 1 from self contained QTmovie faster or slower than going to mpeg2?

Ok here’s a question: How can I streamline/improve the following?: I exported a quicktime movie, self contained, from a time line (36 mins total) . The resulting QT was over 8 gig, too big for a dvd, so I used compressor to make mpeg 1 version, thinking it would be faster than making mpeg 2: it was ok as a reference , but the sound didnt carry over, so before I burned the mpeg1 to dvd I compressed it separately & tried to link them, no joy. FYI it took 1 1/2 hrs to compress the 36 min / 8 gig QT movie down to mpeg 1.

Jeremy, I am just trying to use TC generator (in FCP4.5) right now, but none of the books i have are helpful. I nested a copy of the timeline so it would be smooth (no cuts, in FCP2 TC Generator used to jump back to zero at the cuts). I couldn’t figure out the offset ( I wanted 00:59:58 at the 2 beep on the academy leader) so just started at oo at the first frame of bars & tone. Meanwhile, 2 hrs later its still rendering onto my38 min timeline. Then it’ll be another few hours to convert it to a .mov file. All of this is to make a usable ‘video’ to load onto a firewire so the sound editors can start working.

Any tips on how to streamline this process or control parameters of the tc generator? (yes I read the manual, still a bit confused)

re my crashing problem: went back to QT 6.5.2 didn’t work: fcp then stopped seeing hardware that i’ve had for ages, ie ADVC10 digi box, so we couldnbt work at all. Will try again with different help person on Mon. Also print to video or exporting a QT to make a dvd has become utter nightmare. Am seriously exploring other career paths as I’m tired of being screamed at.

Shane, I exported a 38 min timeline as QT (was & am having horrible problems just printing to video, cracshing like crazy, so wanted to try this.). So I ended up with an 8GIG file, too big for a 4.7 gig dvd, didnt even try toast. Tried compressor to Mpeg , which took ages , then when I used toast to put it to dvd it wouldnt link the sound.

How can I export a 35 -40 min edited sequence to under 4 gigs. Oh yeah, my irrational and micromanaging boss refuses to believe anything takes more than real time: anything done to a 38 min film must take 38 minutes.

The whole demented timeline thing is (I think) an FCP4.5 interracting with QTPro 7.0.2. Tried to go back to 6.5.2 QT that was worse, FCP stopped recognizing my hardware.

Ps: will try to mixdown audio before next tape output. Wanted to do that tonight but the micromanager said “No” so we spent 4 hours trying other things. OH, and she made me throw out the QT of the timeline that took 1 3/4 hrs to make.

Thanks for the advice: I had QTPlayer vers 6.5.1 from which some of the advanced capabilities disappeared at somepoint ( I think when I took the auto-offered upgrade from OSx.3.4 to 10.3.7 it got knocked out) so bought QTPro7 as a download, because I want some of the features.. I will try to buy or reinstall QT Pro 6.5.2 then let you know how that goes.

One timline freeze prob was my error: had stills cache set too low, so it froze on stills. However dissolves still freezing in various timelines, always the same camera roll.
    thanks again….
