Andrea & Debe: I’ve been having similar problems, incl freezing up in timeline at dissolves, especially during “Print to Video”.

    G4 single processor, 1.47GHz, 256kb L2 cache, 2meg L3 cache, memory: 1.12 gig; speed 133MHz, OS X.3.9, FCP 4.5; quicktime 7.0.2
No media is on the startup drive BUT my boss insists on putting the FCP project files there, in a folder (is that bad?)

Any tips on if I should go down to 10.3.8 / lower QT gratefully received: but I really want QT Pro capabilities & we’re in the midst of a project so really dont want to upgrade to FCP5.

Jonny, just read your July 5 problem as I searched for a solution to my similar problem: I also upgraded to 10.3.9 last week then the problems started: specifically, clips play fine in the timeline an on the external monitor going FORWARD, but are jerky backwards (looks like circa 1910 newsreel at 18fps). If I turn off the external video it plays fine at real speed going backwards in the canvas window.

the media is on internal harddrives (not startup drive where FCP program & FCP project files are)

My boss has deemed this “unacceptable”

The tips re the canvas window not touching the edge helped with some crashout issues, but not the jerky motion.

I trashed prfs, restarted, reset prefs. No joy.

What did you end up doing?

    Anyone else have tips?

Other prob: one clip refuses to accept a dissolve: it just freezes up at that point, pauses, then catches up. This happened while on OS 10.3.8

Matt, re burning dvds with Toast: I’ve been using that too, my setup’s similar to yours, (FCP 4.5 though), my quantitys are low, all well until now: NOw I’m getting digital artifacts (square, pink) during swoopy fast pans. These artifacts weren’t visible in FCP or on vhs outputs. Have you had htis problem? FYI original entered into FCP from a dvd dub made from betasp (original was shot on 16mm, 16mm neg to betasp, dvd dub from betasp)

Very belated query/comment: I output refernce dvds from fcp using Toast software & a Lacie burner. No probs UNTIL NOW:

NOw I have a problem: I am getting digital artifacts on the output dvds during any quik pans/fast camera moves. THese are not evident in the FCP woindows or on vhs outputs or on the master input media which was a dvd made from betasp(acc to boss who has masterat his house)

I’ve tried exporting unompressed, no joy. Perhaps this was an input problem that just didn’t show in FCP or on vhs???

Any suggestions on how to reimport without artifats or re-export very welcome!

Juli, FCP 4.5, OS 10.4. single processor G4
