October 17, 2005 at 12:21 am in reply to: Inserting 3:2 pull down on a DVCAM output – some slight problemsYes, I’m outputting through the decklink. As I don’t like doing edit to tapes using firewire. The sequences is fully rendered. I don’t think it is a drop frame issue, because of the fact that the drop outs seem to happen at almost the same place timecode wise. If I outputting a 6 minute tape, it happens 3/4 in around the 4 minute makr. If I output at 20 minute tape, it happens around the 3/4 mark at around 16 minutes. Very weird.

Yes that would be true, if this was a video finish show. We are cutting telecined film, and are going to be doing a neg cut. Thus, I need to create 29.97 outputs for the neg cutter and sound editor, but need to cut in 23.98 for generating solid cut lists etc.

[Luke Maslen] “Please post some information about your setup including Mac or Windows, version numbers for your operating system, NLE software and DeckLink drivers. Are you working in SD or HD? What deck are you using and do you connect via SDI or analog? Do you use genlock? All these details will help to narrow down your problem.
“Hi Luke,
I have a G4 dual 1.2 gigahertz. I am running FCP HD in OS 10.3.9. I know this is a hated operating system by blackmagic, but I had very little choice. As I could not find a working link for quicktime 6.5.2. There were working links for 6.5.2 reinstallers that uninstall quicktime 7, but these were for OS 10.3.9. So, that’s my OS and I am running Quicktime 7.0.1.
I am connecting with SDI and do not have house sync. I have set the deck to internal video reference.
Thats the setup. I hope everyone isn’t going to say its OS 10.3.9, as I am now in the middle of a project, so switching OS, doesn’t seem like a very good idea now.

[Michael Alberts] “The resistance of a negative cutter to Cinema Tools cut lists shouldn’t be a hold up for using FCP and CT to cut a 35mm feature. There are plenty of neg cutters out there who will gladly work with you. “
Here in Vancouver, I think we only have about 2 options for neg cutters. So, without going out of town, you have to work with who you can get. Yes FCP, prejudice is annoying to deal with, but It is not just a pain having the neg cutter complain about the lack of 29.97 timecode, this code serves a useful purpose. The neg cutter checks the neg, to the lock box tape event by event as the film is cut. This is to avoid messups that can happen when you have bad keycode in your FLX file (this has happened to me). If the neg cutter does not have accurate timecode to reference for this process, then this is not really possible. So, I don’t think this feature is optional. Do you just not worry about this on the features you cut?

So far so good. Removing the power cords crossing the breakout cable seems to have solved the problem.
As always, you are a fountain of useful information John.
Much obliged…

Thanks for your response.
No, I don’t have any external drives near my monitor. I do have a mixer and a shielded speaker near it however. If I get some longer cables I could experiment with moving these things further away. I’ll let you know what the result is…

[Noah Kadner] “There’s also the AA, BB, _CD_ field settings to play with in CT. With those included there can be quite a few different combos to experiment with before resorting to AFX.
“Sorry to ask you to spell it out for me… but how do you apply this setting? The Reverse Telecine option has 4 settings that I’m aware of. F1, F2, F1-F2, F2-F1. And within each of those settings you can select a start frame such as AA, BB, BC, CD, DD (in the case of F1-F2). My first frame is an A frame so it should be an AA, yes? My pull down pattern matches F1-F2. So what exactly, should I be setting differently?

[Noah Kadner] “Sounds like standard. CT is quite dumb when it comes to figuring out which frames to discard. There’s a bunch of different settings so you’ll want to try different combos. Also remember you must supply clips that are no longer than one shot- i.e. it will not work on one whole tape of footage. Every time recording is started and stopped on the camera- that’s one clip.
“You’re right. I just heard from production and they’re shooting standard.
In regards to CT, I really don’t know what’s going on. I’m starting a test clip on an A frame. There are no cuts. The clip is not too long and not too short. I’ve tried both pull down patterns F1-F2, and F2-F1. Neither works. There really isn’t anything I can think of left to try in CT. This footage was captured with the remove advanced pull down setting on, could this cause some sort of invisible problem, with the 29.97 standard clip, that is manifesting in CT? I really can’t wrap my head around, what can be going wrong. Meanwhile, I guess I’ll have to do everything manually in After Effects, unless someone has a fix.
