Just open the effects control panel, and go to the Volume control, you can click and drag or click and write a value, you can also use the arrow to expand the panel and use the slider.

If you haven’t got the background option try to add an exterior black stroke, that could do a cool work too, many movie subtitles come this way, white letter with black borders.

This is very simple to do:
Just click the clip you want to adjust, then open the Effects control panel (Shift + 5 on Windows), expand the Volume fx tab, next to the level section there’s a timewatch button, make sure it’s pressed now move the to the time when you want to control the volume and set it to your desire, for example for a fade in, you select time 0:00 and put the Level to -oo, then select time 2:00 and put the volume Level to 0db again, play it, you should hear how the volume ramps up between those time marks, 0 and 2 seconds.
