    If you are using an AJA card, sometimes the uncompressed codecs can cause gamma shifts. Try going into your quicktime codecs, (~/Library/Quicktime) and moving your AJA uncompressed codecs out of that folder. Don’t delete, just move to your desktop or something so you can put them back if thats not he problem. Then save out a new file, bring it into AE, and replace your original source. The re-render and see if the problem still exists.

    How are you acquiring your source, and what codec is your timeline in? Is it uncompressed 8 bit as well?

    I would guess its a real zoom out that blends in with a cg zoom out. They probably did a 3d track on the camera and then matched the camera in CG, then when you get far enough away they switch to the CG.

    This is probably a problem with whatever codecs you are using. Unfortunately gamma shifts aren’t all that uncommon when you switch between codecs. What are you editing in, in terms of codecs. You said uncompressed, but which uncompressed. What are you exporting out of final cut? What are you exporting out of after effects? Is it HD or SD footage?

    Andrew,

    When using mocha and corner pinning, there are no nulls involved. I know you are used to always using a null when tracking, but this won’t work for this workflow. For the best advice on how to do this, watch this tutorial:

    Its pretty quick and it will show you the best workflow how to do this. There are a few steps you wouldn’t guess on your own. Then you can just use your clean plate and apply the mocha data directly to the plate. The tutorial will explain it well.

    My guess is that you have a camera with depth of field on and that the text is z space that is not in focus in the camera. My only other guess is that the text somehow became a guide layer and you really aren’t seeing it at all. Can you tell us a bit more about versions, your project, perhaps post a link to your movie.

    You can use a path that you create in after effects of in illustrator and paste into after effects. Then you can use the stroke effect and set start and end keyframes to write it on and off. You can also use trapcode 3d stroke if you like. Then apply some glows and just get nice path’s and use something like the grid plugin to make a nice grid background. I’m sure there are many tutorials on this as mentioned above.

  • I’m not familiar with the tutorial you are talking about. However, if you are talking about making a 2D layer fold into like a fan or an accordion this can be done pretty simply. What you can basically do is split up your image with large masks like this:

    Then you can make each mask into its own layer. Their are scripts you can find to do this, but you can also simply duplicate the layer as many times as there are masks and make sure each layer only has one of the masks on it. Then pick which side you want your layer to fold from. This will be your parent layer. Make sure they are all 3D. Then if you want the left side to be the side it folds into for instance then this layer will be the main parents. Then take the layer directly to the right of it, set its anchor point to the left edge of the mask, and parent it to the layer before. Then do the same thing for all of the other layers, parenting them to the layer just to their left. Then when you are done, you will have to go to every layer to their y rotation property and set an expression. Pick whip the y expression to the y rotation of the layer before it and just type *-1. So then if you test your layers, you will see they work, but the main layer tilts away from the camera and you can’t see it. So to fix that, you can make a null that aligns to the left edge of the comp and parent the 1st parent layer to this null. Then go into the nulls y rotation, pick whip it to the 1st layers y rotation. Now it should all be working. I know this sounds very complicated, and i hope you didn’t lose me, but its pretty simple.
