Yes, I occasionally use compressor, but its ridiculous that you can’t change the final cut default. Its quicker and easier not to have to go through compressor.

Trashing the preferences should work. That is probably why it was user specific. Its sucks that we still have to deal with his stuff, but I have to trash mine every few months.

  • It will probably save you time in the long run to wait the hour to convert to AVI. That way, premiere won’t have to spend time converting and rendering footage.

I work in an environment using almost entirely PCs and rendering out of after effects, however I edit on FCP. There are no snags whatsoever. People who say PCs can only handle WMVs are being ignorant. You can render AVI, MOV, WMV, MPG and pretty much anything else you can from a mac. If you are using an AJA card they have a codec for PC users that matches apple’s uncompressed 8 or 10 bit settings, so just render to that if that is your setup and you are editing SD. Its extremely simple. I go from mac to pc without learning any new software (other than knowing final cut of course).

  • Jamie, you should render a DV PAL AVI out of FCP. Go to render using quicktime conversion and select AVI then go to options and pick the DV Pal codec. Then make sure both your fcp and premiere sequences are set to DV Pal at the same resolution. If you go from premiere to FCP try rendering a .mov with DV Pal codec. You can do that using the Adobe Media Encoder.

  • Well it all depends on what your sequence settings are in both FCP and premiere. You can render .mov out of premiere and .avi out of FCP, but you have to make sure you are using the right codecs for your sequences. Are you doing uncompressed SD in both, if so what settings?

I usually do QT conversion set to: Sorenson Video 3, data rate of 1000, 320 x 240, an leave the default audio type just changing it to 32 bits. This will make a 30 second spot a 6 MB file or so. However if you are dealing in long form then it can get tricky. The H264 codec is great, but your clients or whomever is viewing will need to have QT 7.
