Thanks. That makes a lot of sense. I’ll see what i come up with at 250kb/s…

After trying it out a few times, it seems to be very similar to
compressing for web, in that the data rate makes the ultimate
    difference in the picture quality.
Don’t need perfect quality, just want it to look relatively clear without
    any fuzz or distortion.
My source material is well lit, well shot and is compressed only
    with FCP’s DV-NTSC setting (kept at 720×480).
My issue is that my client says that he can’t fit the video into his
mobile phone if it’s over 240kb in size (but he’s not very savvy
technologically). I don’t have much experience with media storage
in cell phones. Does it sound about right that it’d have to be less
than 240kb just to fit in his phone?
When I compress at a data rate of 500kb/s the quality is fine (it’s
a 30-second video), but the file size comes to 788kb. Should
    this matter?

shoot. I have a junk PC waiting for me at my old job, wish I had it now (for vidiator).
Anyway, I’m not sure whether or not I have QT Pro, I know I have QT
conversion within FCP, and it gives me the option of 3GPP/3GPP2.
If I were to compress my video with 3GPP2, any suggestions on settings to
    use for high quality output?

    Thanks,
    Josh

thanks shane. it works. i didn’t even have to take my timeline into a bin, i’m able to just highlight the clips and drag ’em to “overwrite w/ transition” in canvas window.

    so basically don’t use photo-jpeg?
does anyone know a really solid way of compressing footage for an off-line edit?

thank you all for your answers. one of you mentioned that QT Animation is a codec that supports alpha channels. what other codecs support alpha channels?
