hi. i shot a moving object against a green screen with a video camera, and used the color key effect to take out the green background. it worked really well.
my problem is that i can’t find a way to export the object out of after effects with a transparent background. i exported it as a quicktime movie, and when i take it into final cut pro, it has a black background. is there any way of exporting it to final cut with a transparent background?

Make sure when you export to quicktime you have selected “RGB + Alpha” in the output module, and Millions + color depth.

Also render to a codec that supports alpha channels such as Quicktime Animation (preferably at 100% for best quality).

I only use “export” when I have to make an SWF. Otherwise, I use “make movie” and render.

And for Final Cut Pro, make sure your alpha channel is set to Straight (Unmatted) otherwise you’ll have a nasty outline around the keyed person

Myeah… I meant ‘render’, and sort of didn’t realize that ‘export’ is also an option in AE. I never use ‘export’.

    Sorry for any possible confusion.

thank you all for your answers. one of you mentioned that QT Animation is a codec that supports alpha channels. what other codecs support alpha channels?

The other codec I know of is “none” (top of the list I think) – Animation codec does reduce your file size in a non lossy way, which can be quite a saving when you have flat colours, less so with video footage. Some of the proprietry codecs (Blackmagic etc) might support alpha, but I haven’t tried them.
