My vote is for the gtx570 2.5gb for internal MacPro usage, gtx 590 if you’re installing it in a cubix box. It’s the best bang for the buck if you can find one.

  • Have you considered using a preconform workflow? All the effects and frame rates would come across just fine. As far as changes go, using ColorTrace will get you similar results to merge color in Symphony.

However, you’ll give up the ability to tweak the effects “in context”. For example, you wouldn’t be able modify an effect once its been flattened. Also, every time the cut changes, you’ll need another full QuickTime file of your sequence to preconform.

This is how I organize my nodes to have multiple serial nodes inside of a CPW. Not exactly what you’re asking, but you should be able to modify it to suit your needs.

I agree. The AAF workflow makes a lot of sense. There are some things to think consider when exporting the AAF out of Avid. Does your sequence have a lot speed ramps or effects? Do you plan on roundtripping back to media composer? I’ve found the workflow to be a lot easier if I send an AAF back to Media Composer. All of the unknown effects are passed through the workflow and is back to normal once you send it back to media composer. In my experience, the relinking workflow has only been successful if I have tape names associated with the original media. Although, I have heard that this has been improved with v6.0.1 so YMMV.

[Ben Rojas] ” the editing side of things has always been cumbersome… That however may change next week!”

Ben, you’ve hit on the one point that keeps Symphony around in my opinion. Being able to do the work IN the NLE is their saving grace. I also hope come Monday morning, that will all change.

For me, it is less of a technical issue than it is a political one. There’s an editor, Rob Ashe, who has a really great quote that goes something like this:

Boss: What software do you edit with?
    Editor: The one you have.

I use Symphony because the company I’m currently with decided to invest in it 7 years ago. They want to make sure they’ve paid for their investment. Are there things that it’s lacking? YES, YES, and YES. But the shows that I’m working on still go out on time, look good and are on budget. That is their main concern. Symphony is what they’ve always used and they’re comfortable with it. I can use the software well, but if I was given the choice, would I recommend it? No.

At other jobs that I’m at, they don’t own their systems. They rent them, and they rent Symphony. I have yet to see a vendor that rents a full blown Resolve system yet (If there are any in the LA area, please let me know!). From what I am told, they do not have the technical resources to support it or the talent pool to run them. I’m not sure I completely agree with that, but that’s what I have heard.

It seems likely that a lot of people will use the Baselight plugin for Avid as it solves many complaints. However, I’m not sure how well it works or how long it will take to render. You also lose the benefit of Symphony’s real time playback, relational color corrector and sequence color merging, which is a time saver for many people.

We are definitely at the crossroads just before NAB 2012. It’s too early to make any decisions. In a perfect world, I would love it if Blackmagic bought Avid, killed Symphony and highly integrated Resolve. Is that too much to ask?? 😉

April 8, 2012 at 10:54 pm in reply to: HDLink DisplayPort 3D – No output

As far as I can tell, it does not work without an hdlink. I’m not clear on why the Nec monitor can’t accept a signal from the decklink card directly. Perhaps someone from blackmagic can chime in.

With display port, you will get 10 bit to the monitor. Hdmi with an adapter will only get you 8 bit as far as I know.

Sometimes I’ll get the “no signal” error on the monitor. While Resolve is still running, I unplug the hdlink for 5 seconds and plug it back in, which usually fixes the issue. Also, be sure that you are not sending an interlaced signal to the monitor. Do you have an issue when you are set to 422 color?

The only other advice would be to reset the firmware. Make sure you cycle the power in order for the upgrade to stick.
