It’s not clear how you’d track it, since I have no idea what the shot is doing – if it’s a flyover, the mask would have to be constantly changing shape, but tracking appears to be the way to go. If it’s just a camera move or zoom, say on a tripod, just mask the hard edges of the roof lines, and then do a track with your mask layer as the target. This may help you out:

Dave is correct – but there may be a middle ground to be found. Get your track as close as you can, and then clean it up by hand. I’ve done fairly complex tracking projects for years (starting in Combustion), and there has never been a single project where there wasn’t a certain amount of hand work that had to be done – sometimes a few frames, sometimes a few hundred. It all hinges on the quality of the video you get, and that’s always a crap shoot. The only way you’re ever going to get perfect is with a motion control camera rig.

Try following this tutorial from Video Copilot. The only difference would be, to remove the cranes, just mask them out (if this is a locked off shot – you don’t say whether it is or not):

So what’s wrong with hitting the zero key on the number pad? You’ve only got to move your hand two inches to the right. I admit that it takes a bit of getting used to – maybe a day or so when I started with AE 10 years ago, but there are other things I’d much rather see high on the priority list than this. I know nothing about programming so saying that something is easy to program could mean a day with one programmer, or three months with a team of fifteen programmers. But if you really want it, post it on the Adobe feature requests page:

As I say, it took a short bit to get used to, and it has always worked this way. You might be able to change this functionality yourself with a free keyboard macro program.

Thanks, Harry – although my postings thus far have been somewhat negative – purely due to the frustration of not being able to install the beta on my e: drive – I’m dying to try Universe. The free effects are very nice looking, and the payment structure looks well thought out. As an owner of the Magic Bullet Suite, Trapcode Suite, and Effects Suite, I’m certainly sold on the quality of RG products.

I have no qualms whatsoever about RG support staff. Anytime I’ve ever had a problem, they’ve been on it immediately. As a matter of fact, I’ve already received a reply about my problem with installing Universe to other than the c: drive – so they’re aware of it, and most likely working on it.
And they also verified that Universe will cause no problems with any of their other plugins which might be duplicated as older versions (Holomatrix, Knoll Lens Flare EZ come to mind).

So after the input I got from people here, I figured it was safe to go ahead with the Universe Beta install. I had been concerned because I already have Trapcode Suite and Effects Suite on my workstation, and wondered whether there would be a clash of licensing.
I downloaded Red Giant link (new version), installed it, and clicked Install next to Universe. Immediately got an error message that there was no software installed. I called the RG tech support, got right through, and was informed that Universe will only install on systems in which the C drive is where your software lives (PPro, AE, FCP, etc.). Now I (and many others) have an OS drive, an Apps drive, and various media drives. All my Adobe software lives on the E: drive – so no dice. According to the tech support guy this is a known issue with the Beta, and will be fixed in subsequent releases. So much for my trying out Universe – not much of a universe if it only works on one planet…but I’ll be patient. This has also been an issue with many of the other RG plugins – I’ve had to move stuff around because it just defaults the install to the C drive.
