There are a couple of ways to go. From the look of the first link, it appears to have been done in a 3D package, although there are some effects which could be accomplished in After Effects.
For something such as the building animating and growing, you could draw your isometric drawings in Illustrator, simply using perspective grids, an easy task, and then bring them in to AE, and animate them using something like Ease and Wizz:

It also looks as if Newton may have been used in some of the animations which appear to have physics properties (bounce). Animation Composer or Motion Monkey could also be of use in speeding up the keyframing chores:

Is there possibly an issue related to the color bit depth you’re using in your project? Try upping the color bit depth to 32 bit and see if you see a difference. It says in the Adobe help that working in lower color bit depths can cause quantization:

I don’t see any sketch, but when I think hinge, I think of two sides, with a rotational pin in the middle (like a door hinge). You could create your hinge with two layers in Photoshop, then move the axes to the center, between the two hinges (thinking of the hinge as a 3d layer). In After Effects, if you parent one part to the other, when you move the parent, the child will move with it. And with the axes in the same location for either side, you can rotate your “3D” hinge like a real one.

Since it appears that you want accuracy in your map locations, I don’t think that a particle effect would be of any use. It looks as if there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 data points (locations) on your reference map. By selecting a single layer with your locator graphic on it, then pressing CTRL-D 99 times, you’d have all your layers ready to move into position. Then it’s a relatively straightforward matter to move each one into its location.
There are geo-location scripts available, if you have the exact locations available, but I think this would be more time consuming than moving them into place by hand:

I’m running an HP Z800 with dual Xeon processors, 48GB of RAM, and an SSD boot drive, so things run pretty crisply…
As far as fonts on the list, if you mean in Nexus, I’ve categorized things pretty well, so I can get to them quickly, but the shortcut of typing the first letter of the font name works quite well (for Palatino, just type P, and it will go to the first letter P font). As for AE, it works the same way, as long as you’re in the Fonts list – type the letter for the font. Same in the Windows/Fonts folder. With 3500 fonts, it gets pretty old scrolling down.

OK, Chris…I just went and downloaded a typeface I know I don’t have installed on my machine (I have over 3500 typefaces installed on my workstation, so I wanted to be sure). I put it in a folder, accessed that folder in Nexus, but a check mark next to it (don’t know if that’s necessary), and it showed up in AE! Then I opened Photoshop, and it showed up just fine there as well!
Here’s what I’m running: Win 7, and CS6 Master Collection, AE and PS. I don’t think I did anything different from what you described, other than the check mark next to the typeface I selected. That may be the key to it. Thanks again for this, I’m going to start uninstalling fonts – my bootup time will probably be cut in half!

Hi Chris –
I use Nexus as well, and as far as I know, the fonts I’m viewing in there are fonts which are already installed on my system (correct me if I’m wrong on this – I’d love to have access to fonts without installing them). Do you have to have Nexus open when you’re making the fonts available to AE? Are you copying and pasting them the way you would from Windows Character Map? I would think that anything which is available to AE would also work with Photoshop. Sorry to follow your question with a question, but this piques my curiosity.
