Is it possible that there’s a missing codec on your system? I have a bunch of .avi files which act just the same way. They were encoded on an Edit* system which used a Matrox card, and they will not appear unless you install the codec.
There are several free apps which will give you all the information you need to find the missing codec – I use MediaInfo:

Yes indeed, it really does work. It was a wake up call for me a couple of months ago when a producer asked my to create an animation to use on a USB stick as a background for standups in a remote news bureau. We had Samsung monitors across the board, so Samsungs are my only experience.
I encoded the video loop as .mp4 (having checked in the manual for what flavors were ok), plugged the USB in to the side of the TV, and up popped a menu allowing me to choose the file to play. Bingo! It worked like a charm! The only caveat I have is that the loop setting wasn’t always perfect, so I encoded a loop that ran for 20 minutes, knowing that it would cover any cut-in we might do without glitching.

I think the easiest way, short of paring down the “doubled” Illustrator paths in Illustrator, is to bring the signature in as an image to AE, and then use the Stroke effect, but draw your paths in AE, masking the signature, then revealing it:

I’d say that a practical effect will be a lot less time consuming than trying to create the effect of it in AE. Put your camera behind a sheet of clear plexi and get out the garden hose (or a spray bottle, depending on the effect you want to achieve). You might also search on some of the stock websites (Pond5 for example) and find exactly what you want for pretty cheap.

Are you getting a white screen and just audio? It sounds as if you’re missing a codec. Can you open the footage in a media player (I’m not on a Mac, but Quicktime Player should be one choice)? If so, look up the properties, find out what codec you’re missing, get it, and install it. Here’s a good snippet of information from a book which everyone should own:
