My guess is that it’s done in 3D, using a particle system (Particle Flow, or Thinking Particles). By doing the effect in “true” 3D, you can get the “flakes” to curl, and generate secondary particles, which would be the “dust” which occurs after the larger pieces detatch. You can control the effect timing with great precision in 3D, whereas with something like Particular, you might get close.

Hi Matt –
I just looked this up, and it appears that Smart Collections now tracks the location of the file(s), following them as them move. If you’ve got a removeable drive, it will give you an alert that the files are missing (if you undock the drive, for example), and you can click Fix to find the files when it’s redocked:
I’m still on CS6, so I’m guessing this feature is new to CC versions of Bridge.

One of the really great things about Bridge is it’s ability to create what is called “Smart Collections”. For example, if you have a keyword set called “Exteriors”, and you want to keep it up to date, you create a Smart Collection called Exteriors, and make the search keyword “exteriors”. The Smart Collection knows when a new clip with the keyword “exteriors” is added (without making any duplicate files), and automatically adds the clip (or clips) to the Smart Collection. I use it for all sorts of searches, from audio clips which are a specific number of beats per minute (I add the bpm to the file title), to files I’m working on for a specific project. By keywording the project name, I can create a Smart Collection which automatically puts all of my footage in one virtual bin, without moving anything around. The key to making it all work is setting up a keywords system in Bridge, and sticking to it.

I would use Adobe Bridge. However, if you regularly move assets, I’m not sure that there’s any solution which will automatically relink when stuff is moved (although it’s pretty easy to update locations in Bridge). Here’s an article I wrote for the COW Magazine a couple of years ago on that topic:

I have three words to say to you Bob: “Talent Not Included”. Although the ground may be shifting under us all in terms of the way the market is working, it will still be a case of talent winning out.
There’s always a perceived threat when technology gets democratized, but it always boils down to talent (and experience). I work in a fairly small market in New Hampshire (not counting my clients worldwide through the web), and when a new production house showed up, I saw it as a real threat to my industrial video work. Sure enough, a few of the clients I had in my sights were grabbed by this guy. But only for one production – his lack of ability to shoot computer screens (I use screen capture), as well as lack of knowledge on how to do it properly, plus poor graphic design skills, and insisting on doing everything himself, relegated him to churning through the clients in the area – he never got a second production. Now I rest easy – until the next one who can afford the equipment comes along.
As Red Adair once said: “If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur.”

I am under the impression that you need two identical video cards, as well as a “bridge” card which enables them to work in tandem. I’m sure someone who’s done this setup will weigh in with more information.

Walter is absolutely correct! There is no such thing in the US as a “broadcast specification”. It is directly tied to each entity playing back that ad, and each one of them will have posted (or should have posted) a broadcast spec sheet, usually in PDF form. Here’s an example of one from my ADI – but do not assume that it will be the same as where you will be sending it:

There may well be slightly varying specs for each station/network you are delivering for.
