Another idea (which I’ve used several times over the years) is to grab (a photo) or create a string of lights as a frame or pattern, then use colored lens flares to make them glow, or flash on and off, depending on how kitschy you want to get with it.

Apparently there’s no easy way, as in AE. You have to import each letter individually on a separate layer, and then change each individual display attribute along the timeline as you want it to appear.

They can if they have permission from the companies to do it. I recently went through this with a corporate client’s video. They initailly gave me a list of companies (large, well known companies), and I asked just that question – when they got back to me, the list had been pared down, some companies added, some dropped. All of the companies were clients of the company doing the video, but not all of them wanted to have their logo in the video. The right way to do it is to get permission before you produce it.

It all depends on the particular look you want. A lot of stuff in the 60’s and 70’s was shot on film stock, so you might want to go with a film stock setting (Technicolor for example) if that’s what you want, plus a lot of footage was shot with lower resolution video cameras (whites a bit blown out, poor color saturation, scan lines), so that’s a different look. The film stuff might have things going on such as gate weave, dirt and hairs passing through the gate, and a slower frame rate, which would give a “softer” look, while the video stuff would have different color footprints.
You’d get the most control using Red Giant’s Magic Bullet Looks, but it’s expensive. Here’s some free film looks:
