Attaching accessories to side of DSLR?
Hello fellow DSLR shooters,
I came across this great camera + audio setup in this article where the author has built their own side mount to attach their Zoom recorder to the side of their camera in a way that actually allows them to look at the screen and monitor the levels while recording.

The author has built the mount themselves in this case, but I was wondering if anyone’s seen something like this (or similar) that you could buy?
I’ve been googling away but can’t find anything like it. Thought I’d toss it out here in case anyone has seen one.

I use a bracket from Bracket 1 to hold two lav mic rcvr packages but it could just as easily be the Zoom if i attached a mini cold shoe pivot thingy – cant come up with the right name but its about 2 inches long

Thanks Joe, I did actually read the article, was just hoping to be able to find a single piece of gear or something that was already assembled to do the job. I’m in Australia and tracking down specific individual bits of gear to assemble can be a frustrating process. I’m perhaps being a bit lazy about it.
Steve – thanks for the video, that’s a great setup you’ve put together. It helps to see all the different steps/parts used and how you’ve rigged it all up. I’ve never needed an audio setup till now so struggling to work out where to put the bits and pieces, and creative rig assembly isn’t really my strong suit. So thanks!
Also… I think “bracket” was the search term I was missing. Finding a lot of different options now on ebay that I hadn’t seen before.

No worries Melanie. The other, similar, approach are dslr “cages” which you can combine with rails and even shoulder pads. Cages can also give you an easy way to add a top handle if you see yourself doing lots of low to the ground handheld type shots.
The cages have many connection points to attach accessories but for me I needed to be able to work with two lavalier audio receivers at the same time and while it’s probably possible to do so with a cage, I think some workarounds might be required.
