Yes, they do. For example, I might be working within a 1920 x 1080 comp, and when I create the new solid for the masks (same size), I end up with a “window” in the center of the comp, which is probably a quarter to a sixth the size of the comp, but the Element 3D model is the proper size to fit the 1920 x 1080 comp.
My solution has been to size up the paths I’m copying from Illustrator; actually to size up the page size to larger than 1920 x 1080. Now this should not have any effect on things, since a vector is a vector, but it seems to work when I paste the masks into the AE solid layer. It’s just strange. I think the problem may be on the Illustrator side. I’ve got some more experimentation to do on this.

While it might be possible to convert the font you want to use to monospace, it would involve a lot of work, using software such a FontForge (which is free). Here’s a discussion of the pitfalls entailed in doing this:

I can tell you that from my experience, Audacity caused all sorts of problems with my PC system. I can’t tell you any specifics, other than that once I uninstalled Audacity, everything went back to stable. And this was on a system with CS6.

Having worked in broadcast for many years (back to the 1 inch tape days), I tend to agree with Dave and Tero, although I do believe that there’s room for animation of the carrier (the boxes and bars which go under the text).
I recently worked on getting the graphics department for a broadcast station set up, and the carriers did some pretty complex animations in (it has to happen quick, usually less than a second). The text, however, since it’s data/information, just did simple dissolves in (about a quarter of a second, almost a soft cut) in the order of their stacking, top to bottom.
I think that’s about as fancy as you want lower thirds to get. Take a look at some of the bigger broadcast and cable news organizations to see how the big guys do it. You’ll find that the carrier moves can be quite complex (many of those are programmed moves in Ross or Viz), while the text moves are kept simple.

The mask isn’t on the same layer as element – it’s on a solid layer, then set up to be a custom layer in Element, applied to a new layer. So there are two discreet layers, one with the mask, one with Element 3D, the way it’s supposed to be done.

That was just what I was thinking, Scott. Why don’t we also have a public forum where Ford, Toyota, and BMW owners line up and argue about which car is the best?
And…if anyone goes to this event, what will they aim to get out of it? Proof that their particular NLE is the “best of breed”? Validation that they chose the correct NLE? A convincing argument to dump their current NLE? I don’t get it…

Just cut the part you want to animate in Photoshop to a new layer, paint the background in to match where the flipper was cut from, and bring it in to AE, then animate.

Missing out on Illustrator is missing out on some really creative capabilities for After Effects. Here’s one example of animating illustrator mask paths:
Needless to say, Illustrator has a learning curve, but getting up to speed with vector creation in Illustrator isn’t that steep a curve.
