I’ve been having the same problem, although it’s intermittent: every time I open AE (CS4, with all current patches) running on Vista 64 bit machine, it crashes once, then opens fine after that. It only happens once, pretty much every time I start AE after shutting down my system.
After searching high and low, and sending crash reports to Adobe (no response yet)I found somewhere that Magic Bullet Looks may be causing the problem – for me at least. I haven’t tried deleting them yet, so I don’t know for sure. I think there’s an update in the works from the MB side.

Generally it’s done by putting a color correcting tubular sleeve, or actually gelling a light panel over the bulb(s) (be it a fluorescent or other color temperature fixture which doesn’t fall within the white balance you’re going for). If you’re referring to compact fluorescents, you could always fake a tube by just taping some gel around the bulb, since they don’t get hot.
You first want to find out what the color temperature of the particular bulb is before you can know what correcting gel to put on it; also, of course, you want to bear in mind what your primary light source is (daylight, tungsten, fluorescent softbox, etc.) before you know what to match to.

There’s a 3D text preset (in presets 2 – you may need to download this from the Adobe website as an additional “goodie”). It’s called “3D Falling like leaves”. Sounds like just what you want.

I think that if you make it clear up front that this is a type of internship or apprenticeship, you will end up with the assistant you want at the price you need.
Bear in mind that sometimes the people who are willing to work for nothing are worth just that. I wouldn’t expect anyone with over a year or two’s experience working on shoots to not be insulted by such a request.
The other side of the coin, however, is that you might provide a clip of the production to the person so that they could say they gripped on “such and such a shoot” to better the odds that they’ll be paid on the next shoot. That opens up the possibility, though, that they’ll take that clip and say they were the producer or the shooter – you never know. Good luck!

I would also warn my client up front that, no matter how much they like it, there are no promises that it won’t look like something the cow left behind when it hits the air. Base it on your experience and knowledge, and the technical side, and sometimes the client can be brought to reason – and sometimes they can’t.
There are so many shades of red (once you start adding green and blue to it) that can work better – maybe you can convince them that burgundy is really red! Good luck!

Soooo…if you’re looking for the “organic” effect with the torch/flashlight, why don’t you just shoot a piece of black cloth or card, do the torch move, then composite it in AE in Additive or Overlay mode?
You now have the torch effect as part of your clip library, and you have complete control of the timing and intensity.

The best way to do this is using a dedicated graphics package that’s made for live video overlay, such as TypeDeko, or PostDeko:

I used the Pinnacle CG products for years (TypeDeko, Postdeko), and it was a simple matter to create my elements (boxes, hightlights, callouts, etc.) in Photoshop, then bring everything in to TypeDeko as a template, and there were countdown timers available, and sequences which could be run live (or in post) so that game scoring was a pretty painless deal.
There was even a built in programming language (K-Code I think they called it – a throwback to its’ Dubner roots) that you could use to automate things like weather full screens (so all you had to do was type the data, and it would format for the correct font, color, size, position, etc.).
It sounds as if using AE for this is like using a toaster to roast a turkey – you’ll get it done – but you won’t be hungry anymore.
