RED TEXT in BROADCAST
I usually try to avoid Red Text when finishing work for broadcast but I have a client who insists on using it in their graphics. I’ve read a countless number of books and seen many posts on the cow regarding this issue. I’ve never been able to work with red text and make it not bleed or stairstep. Even now that I’m working with a Kona LHI for output I just can’t seem to get Red Text to hold up well. I would really appreciate it if some of you folks in this forum could share some trade secrets. best advice I can give. output a 10 or 16 bit 444 uncompressed codec(8 bit or 422 will bleed badly), don’t put it next to other bright colors and finally legalize broadcast values with a limiter than interpolates smoothly like color finesse’s smart limiter.

I would also warn my client up front that, no matter how much they like it, there are no promises that it won’t look like something the cow left behind when it hits the air. Base it on your experience and knowledge, and the technical side, and sometimes the client can be brought to reason – and sometimes they can’t.
There are so many shades of red (once you start adding green and blue to it) that can work better – maybe you can convince them that burgundy is really red! Good luck!

I’ve talked until I’m blue in the face. They’re great clients, really great and 99% of the time we agree but this is an issue I’ve been fighting for a year. When the spots air in HD the red looks good enough where i can live with it. It’s when a small regional station wants to get the spot delivered as a quicktime NTSC DV or MPEG 2 at 18 mbits/sec lower than even DV at 25mbits is when it becomes an issue. A part of it is also pride because I want to show my work in it’s best light.
Thanks for the advice on adding more blue and green I will give it a shot.
