A little difficult to take seriously…. your statement of the situation could be more professional.

Your question really is a configuration concern and if you cannot access the downloadable Configuration guide published by Blackmagic on their site, then please post your inquiries to the Resolve Basics and Configuration forum.

If you are attempting to use a 2K projection system for grading, then I do not understand the noise about Flanders, Eizo-calibration, or expansion units. Some of these items and their implementation are covered in a very matter-of-fact, step-by-step manner in the Blackmagic configuration guide, which covers installations for a number of platforms at a number of budget levels.

If you do not understand these terms, there is a very good chance that you are not the person who should be building this system.

[Enrico Lappano] ” I’m looking for something in between”
Then you are likely looking for some sort of gentle modifier that simulates the non-linear sensinometry of opto-chemical emulsion. The usual go-to gamma characteristic is to place a control point somewhere in the middle of the luminance 0-100 transfer curve, put a concave-up curve on the lower part and a concave-down shape on the upper part of the graph — the ubiquitous “S-curve”. This simulates a kind of “log” behavior that starts travelling toward a “filmic” rendition, mimicing a graceful fall-off of exposure performance, instead of the over-the-cliff crush-and-clip of solid-state imaging, but, you know, there are only so many numbers between 64 and 940. As compared to the billions of crystal-clouds on each layer of every unique film frame.

Maybe there are other individuals attempting to do what you are doing, but it seems a little out of the ordinary — and nothing that I would do personally, at least it has not occurred to me.

You are dealing with two separate sets of media, as far as I can gather. When you : transcoded the R3D files into Apple 422 Proxy, and then edited it in FCP7. as long as you were not using one of the QT proxies in the RDC file hierarchy, you were generating a new piece of media that would have no memory or linkage to the R3D files, save in name and path. When you generate an XML file, that is a “pointer” system that helps an application find an original source element — but anything you might have done with it in Final Cut would be a mystery to RedCine. Maybe this grade and return would work if you were to somehow replace the Apple422Proxy media with something new (ProRes 4×4?) and reconnected that in FCP, so that all your edits, PTRZ adjustments and so on were applied appropriately back in the editor.

Of course, this is what Apple COLOR, Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve, and several other purpose-built grading applications are supposed to do…. without all the other mucking around.

  • [Dave LaRonde] “I also have to ask why the sample rate is set to 44.1 kHz.”

If the OP is using mp3s as source media in a video editing application, it may be attributable to thinking the audio sampling standard is the CD format of 44.1. Its pretty common for musicians and non-film-oriented sound mixers to carry this (erroneous) assumption. Also (erroneously) standard to submit digital audio files at “0” (full blast) instead of dynamically positioned for FCP’s internal reference at -12 or broadcast -20, which makes conforming to broadcast legal headroom, um, interesting. Maybe if the FCC were to fine a few more of them…

[Enrico Lappano] “concerned now whether 29.97 fps will look a little too flat. “

Not sure I’m following/understanding the use of the word “flat”, but I’m a colorist by core offering.

If you are referring to contrast ratio, that has *almost* nothing to do with frame rate — *almost*, because MTF is affected by lens aperture and exposure time, naturally a consequence of frame rate. But if your use of the word “flat” refers to a relative smoothness of motion, because of the higher frame rate, then frankly, I have to wonder what Peter jackson is hoping to accomplish with 48 fps, in the company of other notables who are pushing for 60 fps.

Forests have been felled in the discussion of what constitutes a “film look”. Many would argue that frame rate is not specifically the main constituent. Offhand, there are probably 20 or so other optical phenomena that are more important, even discounting all the cheap tricks that plugin developers sell that have more to do with “bad” film, than actual emulsion-dye-layer media.

  • [Sebastian Woeber] “Maybe the guys did something wrong while shooting?”

By some slim-probability chance, is there anything at all else (like “color bars”) included in the encoded material that might serve as reference for whether the decoder is working or not?

  • The answer is yes, changing the flag to “true” does yield a 29.97 returned sequence, even though a couple of lines up from there the frame rate is 30.

  • In the (Resolve) generated XML for the return trip, do you mean?

  • I encountered an F55 last week, and Resolve was on the list of 4K supporters, however, you may need a pluginfor XAVC similar to the XDCam workflow that is supported only when FCP is installed. At this point, with the advent of 4K and this Sony codec, I see the actual cliff that Final Cut 7 will finally go over. And Media Composer and Symphony if AVID cannot respond.

  • I’m getting 29.97 projects back as 30 fps, and the cut-n-paste workaround is not my idea of a bug fix.
