If Final Cut is now seeing the files as 29.97, then the 24P has probably been frame rate converted with 2:3 field cadence and is now 2997i. There are tools for stepping back into 24 fps, but it will likely be time consuming, as most “reverse telecine” operations are fairly intensive and if you don’t know the ABCD progression it is pretty likely you will do it wrong. I see it wrong on network broadcasts all the time, so my sense is that its becoming a lost art.

[Joakim Ziegler] ” I see a Digital Betacam deck will still run you around 50000 dollars new…”

New, yes. “Used”… anywhere from $1400 to $2500. Just picked up an A500P a couple of weeks ago for 750GBP, and it is in use today. Tape is not complicated — file delivery seems ridiculously poorly understood and for anything more than 2 GB — seriously? Three days of upload? FedEx is faster.

Oh, not happy with the benefits of “democratization” and the expectation of Free Lunch?

Wait until the DSLR proponents get ahold of how “ACES” will, by their interpretation, equalize everything out.

    er. Not.

Multicams were something that Apple never really figured out even when they were in control of both FCP and COLOR. Essentially it behaves similarly to an imbedded sequence, which are verboten. Even when you “commit” a Multicam, its still a multicam– if you can still “open” it, that means there are going to be ambiguous source references in the XML.

[Archie Fenwick] “Would this generally be a better idea – if I could fit them all in?”

Haven’t you seen those silly AT&T ads about how “more” and “faster” and doing more than one thing at a time is better?

It is. And I wish I was human again.

[andrew smith] “can you do this with aaf’s if you have avid media composer on your system – that is, clean up and check aaf’s created on another system?”

Yes, of course. Sometimes a big advantage to get rid of text generators, graphics, and so on that can corrupt the aaf round trip. Two years ago, a series started each episode with a text disclaimer, which apparently convinced the edit system on the round trip that the whole show was a text generator and so we’d get 44 minutes of black back in Media Composer. Deleting that first generator fixed the problem, and very often I really don’t want the bars, slate, countdown…. that sort of thing. Also really helps to have a chase Quicktime if you are in doubt about picture content — sizing, speed changes, flops, and so on. Or whether the editor has ‘trowelled on’ a color filter (you don’t see in Resolve) that is going to screw up the grade on the return trip….

This seems to be a bug in the XML re-write. Open the (Resolve) XML file (text editor) and check the status of NTSC (true or false) and change that value — I think to “true” and you should get 23.98 when you open the XML back in Premiere. This was discussed on the Basics and Config forum.

  • [andrew sableton] “In other words do I need to purchase a Symphony license just for this compatibility or will Media Composer work fine for this purpose?”

No, you don’t need to buy a Symphony license. I swap projects, render DNx and ftp the round-trip AAF+media (not all the time) but often enough and it isn’t an issue. Symphony here at this end and Media Composer at that end and no one can tell the difference.
