[Joakim Ziegler] “lots of people would be willing to pay extra for some more DCP-oriented output. I don’t think they need full DCP authoring in Resolve,”

I have some money tied up in DCP authoring already, but the truth is that distribution and interoperablity are so all over the freaking map that releasing a drive is a terrifying experience. Most can play InterOp, but not all can play SMPTE, but other problems with frame rates, resolutions, poorly parsed CPLs… you name it. So what if they play back fine under EasyDCP? Meaningless when released into the wild.

Fuji has officially shut down film production, stock, locked and two smoking barrels of chemicals. Gone. So we are now really stuck with digital distribution — let the fun and total chaos begin.

April 4, 2013 at 5:16 pm in reply to: Having to render after importing from Compressor4

[Edwin Street] “Does ProRes4444 only have one extra layer (Alpha Channel)?
And how can I see this extra channel? Do I need to use Motion or After Effects?”

The 4’s are sampling channels. 4444 can carry four streams of image information — RGBA or Y’CbCrA.
Your green bar might mean that you are carrying RGB in the 4:4:4 tables, which might give FCP some issues. Unfortunately there are no flags in the ProRes4444 codec to explicitly state what it is, exactly, that is being transported. RED usually exports into PR4444 as RGB.

There are ways to examine the alpha channel, if it exists. In FCP’s Viewer, you will notice three buttons imbedded in the center along the top frame. The one on the right has a “cornerframe” icon. Clicking on it will reveal some options — Overlays, wireframes, and “RGB”, “Alpha” and “RGB&Alpha”. RGB, of course, shows you your color picture. Alpha will show you your key-holdback, and RGB&Alpha will give you a sense of how the alpha will interact with the foreground picture elements to punch-through a background. Its a red/monochrome representation.

Most compositing software has to be able to show you the alpha channel, extract it, modify it, and re-embed it.

[Brandon Smith] “So I’m guessing that it knows not to transcode the file but was a little confused by the different verbiage next to the audio and video files.”

There was some controversy a number of years back about Encore v3 (as I recall, but everyone feel free to correct me on this) where surround ac3 were being re-encoded as stereo even if the “don’t transcode” option was selected. Can’t say that I have ever run into this, and certainly if anything similar is still going on, it is occurring at hyperdimensional time travel speeds. The latest Encore stitches stuff together fairly efficiently.

Media Encoder may be a good way to go forward, now that Apple has pretty much given up on Compressor, even dumbing it down for FCX-compatibility. Quite a few options will go away if you purchase the new stand-alone version4.

Product details infers a minimum OS of 10.8, so how is this different from the generic GeForce cards, with respect to supporting Resolve?

Use a WAVE and a Logitech trackball. Biggest issue for me is cervical neck fatigue/pain.

But this was the same even when using a full-on 8:8:8 set of panels.

April 3, 2013 at 6:07 pm in reply to: Will Resolve work with this setup?

This is a bit scary, but I just downloaded 9.1.3 for my Sony VAIO WinPro7, and it works just fine. It sees my Tangent WAVE, etc. I just might use this laptop for demos…

Typical Y/C delay that you get from color-under recorders like 3/4″ Umatic and VHS. Nattress makes a series of filters called “Bag of Tricks” for FCP. This one seems to be specifically the G Chroma Shift.

[Brandon Smith] “didn’t know if encore will have to recompress an h.264 file”

You might actually be working in 2997, as FCP plays fast-and-lose with frame rate anyway.

There is an option in Compressor to create an H264 element stream specifically for BluRay useage, and if you configure Encore to use that without transcoding, then that is how things will be. Its a nice workflow.

[Chris Harlan] “Louis CK on Conan last year, Everything is amazing and nobody is happy.”

I think its older than that, but never more true.

I don’t know the accreditation, but a number of years ago the story went around that a retiring or leaving-the-position flight steward issued the following departing message to the passengers (paraphrasing): Welcome to [city, time, and temp]. We hope you enjoyed your flight, and the next time you feel like hurling yourself through the stratosphere at just under the speed of sound in an aluminum tube, sitting on 3 tons of kerosene, please think of us, and thank you for choosing [airline].

Which is kind of the way it is.
