[veronika koubova] “Is there a setting they can export footage within the legal range? “

Do you know what “setting” they are currently using? Rec 709? Something else? Full digital 0-1023? This all depends on target colorspace.

July 26, 2018 at 7:49 pm in reply to: time-lapse vs change clip speed

Using a speed map in a post application will give you the option of a couple of ways to modify the relationship between the individual frames — three main approaches; “Nearest” “Blend” and “Optical”. They will all yield a slightly different feel to the time progression. You may also derive a benefit from using a de-flicker filter which may not have to cope with abrupt lighting changes. A true time-lapse with an intervalometer of course is frame-for-frame which is data-density efficient. If that is not a concern, and the expense/investment ratio is now very different from when we were paying for film stock, I’d shoot real time or at a ratio not as dense as your final. If you have to perform fixes or cleanups with individual frames, you will have the option of something adjacent to your select frame to pull the “heal” pixels from.

July 18, 2018 at 4:05 pm in reply to: Stabilizing with point tracker?

[Sabri Liefert] “Kind of confusing why it´s named “Classic Stabilizer” seems more like an advanced stabilizer menu.”

Because the newer “refined” version of any application is generally more automated – aka, AI‘d and consequently offers fewer options that it is assumed you don’t need. Then the previous tool/product becomes identified as “Classic” in the Coca-Cola model. And history is rife with examples of how that tends to go.

July 16, 2018 at 4:20 pm in reply to: BlackMagic eGPU

Hacking the Thunderbolt-3 interface seems to be a lot of trouble to go to in order to achieve slow results. There is a reason TB3 is specified. TB2 or slower is not on par with PCIe 16-lane, which is what the eGPU is trying to emulate. Even though the AMD GPU built-in to the unit seems to be very capable, I don’t see it as a desktop substitute yet – just trying to get ahead of those who will try to leverage it beyond the laptop-MacBookPro deployment it was clearly designed for.

Very curious to see how it would perform as a dual-GPU platform with the 2017 27″ iMacPro5K with the 580 on-board.

July 3, 2018 at 9:10 pm in reply to: Audio mapping to soundcard interface channels

This was touched on last week on the BMD Resolve forum:
    https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=75658

    Krishna Pada wrote (for Soundblaster)
    Here are the steps:

    1. In the Resolve preference pane, I had to change to 5.1 channel sound and then assign tracks like this: Audio 1 to Output 1, Audio 2 to Output 2, etc.
    3. In the settings page, capture and playback section, I needed to change audio tracks to 6 (2 is the default).
    4. While laying the 5.1 tracks which came from the Sound studio, I created six mono tracks and laid them.
    5. In the Mixer window in Fairlight, I changed the panning of each track as per it’s name. L goes to left upper corner, C at centre point, LS at left lower corner, etc. I was initially confused about LFE placement, then figured out that it has to be kept just opposite the centre track.
    6. In the Fairlight tab, I opened Bus Station. Changed the output to 5.1 (it comes stereo by default).

    maybe that might help.

[Duke Sweden] “but not add anything?”

Because it is the answer to your question. It is the angle made between the incident light (sun) and your subject.

The answer is in your question ..

On the bottom picture, as you can see, when my head is tilted down my skin exposure is perfect. But in the top picture, when I lift my head, my nose gets that bright overexposure.

June 26, 2018 at 6:48 pm in reply to: Playback Options

There is a loop function, but the default is to play the clip you are in. If you are using the Resolve control surface, you should be be able to loop around a Marked In/Out. I don’t think there is a feature yet for looping for a pre-determined duration around a cut.

May 28, 2018 at 6:18 pm in reply to: More Closed Captioning control?

[Tom Matthies] “Is there a way to “force” the caption position/typeface/style into the captions “

Closed Captions 608/708 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EIA-608 don’t actrually have a style or typeface, not the Line 21 industry-standard, anyway, which used to be decoded in everybody’s TV set, so no, NO preferences.

What exists in Resolve15 for the moment are subtitles. Big distinction, at least as far as the FCC is concerned.

I have been following this for a little while, and the import file of choice is SubRip (.srt) and not even .scc or .mcc.
Export is resctricted to .srt and .vtt — so NOT broadcast legal, but just fine for streaming. It is embedded as a VANC, so a reasonably sophisticated player, like Switch, should be a good indicator of what is going into the playable media file. QuickTime Player has, and likely will always be, a total disaster — I’ve never seen a consistent playback out of any version, complete with mangled text, improper formatting, positioning, out-of-sync… don’t know how or why Apple thinks its a viable feature.

Embedding the subtitle track is currently loosely CEA-608 in MXF-OP1A and QT in the Delivery page and cannot be exported via Decklink or UltraStudio (yet).

This is all in the current manual.

May 25, 2018 at 3:15 am in reply to: 4K Client Monitor

[Kevin Camin] “can I have the 4K TV be a mirror of the playback window?”

No, even if you force it, this is not necessarily a good idea.

You will encounter an infinity of issues with the calibration/matched look between the various monitors and if you are not careful and invest in a robust characterization, you run the risk of not knowing which one is right. client confidence, not to mention your own, will be out the door.
