  • [Evan Kultangwatana] “when using prores4444, does resolve waffle between YUV and RGB, or different gammas depending on your render settings?”

As a rule, no, it does not. It pretty much does exactly what you ask it to. But other playback applications, Final Cut, Quicktime,… etc., which are also subject to the System ColorSync preferences, do.

I am supposed to be generating an article about this, with diagrams containing circles and arrows, but what you are encountering is ambiguity between applications in how RGB / Y’CbCr scaling is handled in different codecs that are capable of carrying either value map. In the simplest case, “full scale” RGB in 10-bit is regarded as 1-1023. Linear video is scaled 64-940. Obviously if one is misinterpreted as the other, the display values will be noticeably different. Unfortunately, codecs like ProRes444 don’t have a flag to indicate what they are carrying, so you either have to tell the application what it is (as Media Composer requests) or hope that the display app “guesses right.” They don’t, usually.

Use of an outboard scope makes this obvious, because the outputs are measured independently, displayed as numerical values, and you can see that the black and white points are not being placed correctly. This can manifest as the “gamma bug”, because most people operating simple systems are eyeballing their media and the relative contrast/brightness is similar to that defect — but this should all be in the past, if your operating system is later than OSX10.6.8., because Apple standardized (finally) on 2.2-2.4 rather than 1.8 with that version.

[Andy Field] “FCP 7 has been EOL for several years and it’s still BBC Washington’s primary edit tool (not sure about London end) with no sign of change soon.”

For me, as a facility owner, if it still does what I need it to do, my first impulse is please god, if I don’t have to spend any more money and still deliver product, I really, really, really need to turn a net in-the-black number sometime. Sooner would be better than later.

That would be the “quantifiable” thing that would attract my interest. What the number is on the bottom line.

  • [Jeremy Garchow] “I’d be curious to know why scripted dialogue editing is not possible in X”

You know, it probably is… inventing workarounds and a third-party plugin business is what this version of editing software depends on.

What I meant by “scripted”, though, is a deliberately planned, blocked, shot, slated, shared-collaboration that has a formal structure consistent with the film-finish workflow established over the past hundred or so years. It is possible that sign-off structure is somewhat ossified, but human decision-making being what it is — coupled with — and this is an industry norm — individual quirks — I’ve witnessed editors throw the whole thing over just because they hated the cataloguing system, let alone the hoops they would have to jump through to export all the capital assets required by support contractors. Not saying that progress has not been made, just that some ships are just too big to get turned around in the Panama Canal. Per “swinging a cat.” None of which has anything to do with the “feature set”, that is, how-to-do-things.

“Black Mirror”… I will have to look for that. You know I am a foreigner. Is it on Netflix?

[Perry Trest] “the SDI to FSI is out of sync.”

If it is late from the Decklink via SDI, then that sort of points to a software-related latency in handing off the picture to the PCIe card. Resolve (and can’t comment on Premiere) has no such adjustment, and really, the latency should be zero. I used to have to reset this in FCP every time there was a point version release in either Desktop video, AJA Control Panel, or Final Cut itself, because those 4 frames would be re-established.

[Bill Davis] “modest little Resolve control surface”

Messed around with a couple of the iPad offerings — no tactile feedback, requires that you take your eye ‘off the ball’, *not the controls* — the picture that you should be working on, so distracting — and continually dropping off the wireless workgroup. So logging back in every few minutes was not helping the workflow.

Actually the Resolve controller is quite modest. I have spent that much at least on the succeeding generations of Tangent surfaces over the years, starting with the -200s. If Resolve had been a product when I started my own business, that is what I would have done, but it was daVinci then and that company was dedicated to the 2K+, at a budget level that is no longer imaginable by most on this forum.

  • [jon smitherton] “it is an extremely fast editor without having to worry about tracks; in/out bang! (overwrite, assemble, overlay).”

There you go. For standard, templated productions with an unstructured media source — that is, most of “news” or improvised timeline structures – as opposed to scripted – that’s what this little editor was built to do. A standup, some B-Roll, an overlay… done. Right from the words “this is your timeline in X” on that fateful night in ‘Vegas.

“Quantifiable” market penetration data would be difficult to supply — it would also have to contain the word “verifiable” because sales does not equal utilization. I can cite handfuls of colleagues who have downloaded the thing, and then toasted it. Not with champagne, immolated is what I mean.

Also astonished at the apparent innocence around the prevailing influence of financial considerations. Especially Americans should be acutely aware that their own government at almost every level has been compromised by the overwhelming presence of Big Money. Institutions that can (*) pull off the biggest frauds in history, in plain view, and not even investigated. *Allegedly*, for legal reasons….

The biggest difference I find today between arguments as to whether Orwell’s nihilistic vision in 1984 is still relevant, is that we now have to take the https://WWW into account — which is far, far more serious, and something he never knew about. Doublethink? I think the term is now “spin”, which I see used here in a pretty cavalier way, and blithely accepted, which is the way to make it work.

[Perry Trest] “Can anyone explain why the audio and video arrive in sync on both monitors with Adobe/Davinci/DeckLink but not with Media Composer/Nitris DX?”

Is there a latency offset (#of frames) in the Media Composer output configuration? In Final Cut Pro, the default offset is 4 frames, which you have to set to either 0 or 1 depending on your master monitor’s latency.

[Juan Salvo] “Out of curiosity, what’s the reason for not wanting to ugrade?”

My bet would be that the system currently running R9 won’t be able to support eleven… at least on paper wrt recommended operating system and hardware configuration.

There are also some subtle changes between versions that will cause archived projects to get cranky.
