  • No one made a “math mistake.”

These aspect ratios were created deliberately as disruption factors — basically the cinema/theatre industry discriminating against 4×3 broadcast television. The video posted above doesn’t go into any of the politics around how the Edison format morphed into a thicket of widescreen shapes other than as a marketing gimmick, but it was fairly deliberately chosen to make it incompatible with the small screen. And it continues.

As an industrial aside, flexible film stock begins (or began) life as a single sheet of emulsion that is longitudinally slit for the common gauges… 70mm –> 35mm –> 16mmm –> 8mm. These are just engineering approaches.

Terrific that the video finally gives Kerns Powers a shout-out for coming up with the equal-area rule that yielded 16×9.

For some fun math…take the 2 figures “16” and “9” and keep multiplying them by “2” until you come up with some other very familiar numbers. Interesting, huh?

As for the rectangularity of the image, and how much image is “wasted”; consider for a moment that all light paths through a refractive lens is circular… so you are “wasting” a ton more light on the collective square than you realize. All that even before the “overscan” that we used to deal with in broadcast television that is now under revision as “safe -action/title.”

My understanding is that the Fairlight world is a page inside the Resolve world. Haven’t actually even downloaded a beta of 14 yet, just attending a lot of demos, waiting for a reason to move on… that and completing a number of projects. I will likely build a new system and make a clean break.

First line of defence is “undo.” Ctrl?-Z as I recall. Depends on how long the problem was left alone or how hard you struggled fixing it otherwise.

[Robert Blair] “Is there any way for me to import an AAF that allows me to retain color information from MC AND the appropriate cuts?”

No. The fundamental image transformations are different algorithms and the only common list that you might be able to share among applications is really the CDL, which is virtually useless for grade. Its basically primary RGB only, intended to share DIT/Grade guides.

    [Allen Zagel] “Galaxy S7.”

This is likely your entire issue.

All of these microcameras record media with massive data-reduction strategies, not the least of which is a non-uniform or “variable” frame rate. Most American devices state a nominal 29.97, but that is an average target for these devices, and like mp3, they drop whatever is not considered to be essential for reconstituting your motion video stream. Most consumers find it odd that an advanced application like Resolve cannot cope with a non-uniform frame rate (all the consumer *player* software is built to accommodate this technique) but keep in mind, that’s all they do.

The general approach to solve this incompatibility is to prep your field footage for editing by transcoding it into a fixed frame rate codec — ProRes, DnX, are the major families for use in post production.

Glad you enjoyed your fam-flight. I haven’t done a tow-launch for a couple of decades now. If you found that exciting, try packing all of that into about 90 seconds sometimes, which is the winch-tow approach. You feel like you’re going straight up (what is known as a tactical departure…) The trick is to keep it straight and not yaw/slide off the cable run. (costs altitude gain…)
