If you are importing from files, what I usually do is:

    1. Link the files
    2. Drag the files into a Sequence
    3. Delete the unnecessary tracks from the Sequence (sounds like you would like to delete all of the audio tracks)
    4. Transcode the Sequence. This will create Master Clips with Video only.

(note: This is also a good way to remove unnecessary audio tracks before importing/transcoding. I sometimes get files that have 8 audio tracks, but I only need 1-4, so I delete 5-8 only in step 3.)

If you have already imported the files, there is a way to change the clips after importing with the Unlink/Relink and Modify Clip features.

Make sure you have the Clip or Sequence timecode on the Data Display on the top 1 or 2 rows.

When you create the Groups, it assumes the top-most item is the most important. So, if you’re able to group your External Audio above the Cameras, it will default to that when you create the group.

I like to call my audio the take name, i.e. A-1, and give the camera(s) a letter designation, i.e. A-1c. Then, when I organize by Clip Name, the Audio is above all of the camera clips.

You can re-name the clips after you’ve grouped, and the order will stay the same.

(Side note, it also organizes the Cameras in the order they are in the bin. So if you have more than one camera, make sure they are in the order you want when you create the Group.)

Would the “Show Reference Clips” in the Bin Display options help you?

Then you can export the Bin as an ALE and copy that into a word or excel program.

Have you tried MPEG Streamclip? one drawback is that it blows away Timecode and starts everything at 0:00.

Try adding a prefix to all of the files? i.e. “video_”.

Think of it as a set that is being displayed. When I bring it up, it the first 4 tracks (1-4). Clicking Group makes it go to tracks 5-8.

Alternatively, you can change the Amount of tracks shows by clicking on the #, and it will display more tracks. Some like to have a small window, so the Group button is a way to go to other tracks to make adjustments.

Reiterating to not use MPEG Streamclip for creating files. It strips the embedded Timecode in your file.

out of curiosity how much were the keyboards at MM? I can’t seem to find any info online

  • I would make a new Bin and “Link to AMA” to the RED files. Then, open the different bin with your clips and sequences.

If this is still not working, make sure you Select /highlight all of those RED files you linked to, and then go to the Sequence that has offline material and Relink. In the top of the dialogue box, you will see an option that says “Selected Media in Other Bins”.
