Up to 4 drives are supported…which is what I figured, this is confirmed on Apple.com, Mac Pro RAID card page:

    Chris,

My bad, on the RAID 0… I was bouncing between 2 threads that had some similarities.

Anything else, please let me know.

You said: I do have the Apple Raid card is there some other way to configure it besides Apple Raid Utility. Also how would I configure a hardware raid through my raid card?

Ah, I see, sorry I missed that, I thought you were doing a software RAID internally….which would be limited in speed & also in RAID levels.

I don’t know of another way to configure your Apple RAID card except through their utility. The Apple RAID card is a hardware RAID card, it has both a processor & RAM on it.

The speeds you are getting probably have to do with a limitation of the processor on the Apple card. I do know that when the CalDigit RAID card worked internally on Mac Pro machines that it WAS faster than Apple’s because the processor was faster on the CalDigit CRC card.

I’d say this, wait & see, maybe Apple will come out with something new that’s faster internally. Time will tell.

    Christopher,

Ok with a software RAID, you’re processor is being used to not only to run your OS but also your application(s), be it FCP or something else…this is true with an internal software RAID created through disk utility generally RAID 0 or 1 or with an external solution.

Your processor should be used for 2 things ideally, 1. Running your OS & 2. Running your applications.

In order to run a software RAID, you’re going to use some of the processing power of your computer, although perhaps not as much with newer machines as as the case in the past.

The other problem with software RAID is you’re running your software over software, if your OS crashes, that could be a potential problem & cause your software RAID to crash. You mentioned RAID 0, again, you’d be using some system resources from the processor to run it & get speed, but a crash means you could potentially lose everything.

You’ve got many options for a hardware RAID 1, 2 bay FW 800 connected product, we have a product called the for instance, that does an automatic RAID 1.

Any other questions, please do ask. I’m on here to play advocate to Bob, (whom I know pretty well). We’re all here to help.

    Christopher,

    If you’re set on Internal…..

Have you considered looking at the Apple RAID card? You should be able to get better performance in hardware RAID as opposed to the software RAID you’re now using. Yes it would require you having to spend some money & you’d give up a PCIe expansion slot, but if what you’re looking for is better performance, the trade off could be worth it to you.

Externally with the right RAID card & Storage, you’ll always be faster.

    Just a thought.

A couple questions the RAID card people will want to know.

    Same OS on both machines?
Same hdd’s in your external storage with the same firmware on both machines?
Same firmware on both RAID cards?

If yes to all, sounds like you’re on the right track.

    John,

In addition to Bob’s post, it could go either way, I’d check with your RAID Card manufacturer to see if what you’re wanting to do would work…
