  • Moving RAID enclosure from one mac to another

Posted by John Davidson on December 8, 2010 at 12:05 am

    Hey Bob,

A very simple/dumb question. If I have the same RAID controller card on two macs with all the same software installed, can I unplug my mini-sas RAID5 array from one and into the other as if it were a regular hard drive? Not sure if the controller card for my RR4322 has data-specific information on it to control a specific enclosure, or if it merely ‘reads’ the information on whatever drive is inserted.

    Thanks!

sometimes yes, sometimes no. I used to assume that the answer was always YES. You had two identical RAID host cards, just move your drive array. But I learned the hard way that sometimes, if you have TWO DIFFERENT DRIVER VERSIONS, or two different firmware flash versions with the same card, the media will not be seen by the second computer. When I called to complain about this, I was told “load the older version of driver on machine # 2, and you will be able to see the media”.

DONT THESE COMPANIES CHECK FOR BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY !!!!!!

well now I know the answer to this – No, they don’t.

    John,

In addition to Bob’s post, it could go either way, I’d check with your RAID Card manufacturer to see if what you’re wanting to do would work…

Thanks guys! Will do. The machines will be identical so that should help.

A couple questions the RAID card people will want to know.

    Same OS on both machines?
Same hdd’s in your external storage with the same firmware on both machines?
Same firmware on both RAID cards?

If yes to all, sounds like you’re on the right track.
