  • Shawn,

It should be the column pertaining to “errors” a high number would be bad, while a lower number would be interpreted as “good”.

Some cards will have a listing like this
    10/120
meaning 10 errors out of 120 allowable errors.
120 being the threshold set by the manufacturer.

I uploaded a .pdf from ATTO for you here: https://f1.creativecow.net/4514/atto-smart-info

    Check this out Shawn: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24875/smart-utility/

Someone that has used that software indicated: “I get an answer I can trust in a few seconds, in contrast to Apple’s Disk Utility that generally warns when it’s to late.”

  • Hey Shawn,

Run SMART status, (Areca, ATTO & Highpoint cards all have this feature) on each of the 16 drives. If you get 4 or more drives that report read/write errors, time to replace. The enterprise class drives you indicated generally have a MTBF of about 5 years, but a little “oil change/maintenance” every once in awhile certainly doesn’t hurt.

    Paul,

That card is not yet compatible with Mountain Lion. I would check with Areca to see when support will be available for it.

    Alex,

I double checked with Luis here, I agree he SHOULD be getting those kinds of numbers but he isn’t. Looks like he’s got the card in the fastest slot he can be in. Maybe it is the iStorage enclosure, not sure. I would imagine the drives he’s using are the Standard 2TB Deskstar drives, so that much should be OK. The speeds he indicated he’s getting are way too low.

Unfortunately there’s nothing more you can do to get more speed except to trade in that ATTO R680 card & get an Areca 1882X card.

June 19, 2012 at 8:58 pm in reply to: RAID, or Fibre Channel server?

    Laco,

I brought up Fiber Channel as that’s what you initially suggested. For a DAS, or Direct Attached Workflow….

Our EB800MS, https://www.proavio.com/eb800ms-mini-sas-desktop-raid-ready-storage.html with the Areca 1223X card will give you RAID 5 performance of 800-900MB/s read/write. Our 8 bay EB800MS also features a cable-less back-plane that eliminates the point of failure between your drives & the backplane of the chassis. We also configure your storage in your choice of RAID levels and OS and then burn-in and test your storage before shipping as part of our service & support of the product.

This is a field proven solution.

We offer our 8 bay EB800MS populated with a 3 year warranty & 1 year advanced replacement.

Hope that helps, anything else, feel free to ask. Should you need a reseller in your area, drop me a line & we’ll find someone who will be happy to help you.

June 19, 2012 at 4:48 pm in reply to: RAID, or Fibre Channel server?

    Laco Gaal,

    If you need something shared….

The product that would suit your needs is from Enhance Technology, the parent company of Proavio, which is the Enhance DS316F8 8G – 16 Bay Fiber Storage.
(The link is a downloadable JPEG product file).

This is a new product, so it’s not yet on the Enhance website, http://www.enhance-tech.com

Should you want further information as to set up, etc, call us, we’d be happy to walk you through the process. CalDigit does not offer a Fiber solution, let alone an 8G Fiber solution.

June 7, 2012 at 5:24 pm in reply to: G-tech GSPEED Q, opinions?

    Ruben,

I think what Bob Zelin was implying is that there is no “cheap” way to share….. with appreciable speed.

Could you do what you suggested? YES, share data, but you wouldn’t be able to edit in real-time.
