Patrick, all of the objects are in the same position on the Z axis (front to back. If you move some forward and others backward, or change the depth of some, the objects will not appear all mushed together.

  • The really short version of instructions:

Typically, I use the Photoshop art as a tempate. You can use the “place” command to drop the bit-mapped image into your Illustrator document.

You can lock the item or put it in a locked layer to keep it from moving.

Now use the various Illustrator tools to build the same picture in vectors. The pen tool can be used to follow the lines around a particular shape. It’s best to make closed paths and to use fill rather than strokes. If you have basic Illustrator skills, you should be able to do this fairly simply.

To make things really flexible, you can put each shape on a different named layer. If the Photoshop art has text in it, it’s often faster to determine the font used, retype the text using the text tool and convert the resulting text into outlines.

  • Patrick,

I can speak to the Photoshop question – ProAnimator relies on vector-based information in the Adobe Illustrator format. Photoshop is capable of exporting paths in Illustrator format, but it’s very limiting compared to using the actual Illustrator program.

If you have a color bit-mapped logo in Photoshop you’ll need to create a vector version based on that… and Illustrator is the best tool for that task. You do have the option of creating the basic shape and mapping the photoshop image to it.

    Hi Keith,

I suspect you’ll need to save your C4D file in a legacy format. The following is from the troubleshooting page on the Zaxwerks site. I believe the following statement is true for both ProAnimator and Invigorator.

C4D – The Invigorator reads and writes version 5 format which is exported by the GO! version of Cinema 4D.

    Hi JezzFush,

I would first suggest upgrading to the current version. 4.1.0 is available on the Zaxwerks website… it’s a free update.

    Hello FinalOne,

yes, the pict format supports alpha channels and ProAnimator 4 exports picts with alpha channels. I just did a “render frame” and saved the picture in pict format, opened it in Photoshop and the alpha channel was there… from ProAnimator 4.

For me, the devil is in the details. The light beam effect is not in the same 3D space as the lighthouse, but if you closely examine the top of the lighthouse, the beam does appear to make that transition from in-front-of to behind. I did this by splitting the beam layer and changing the opacity of the sections duuring the critical phase. The light beam also appears to affect the light on the front of the lighthouse. It doesn’t, but I used another bit of trickery to fake it.

    Here you go.

Be patient for the file to load – it’s about 6 megs in its current form and not designed for fast-load.

Actually, I’ve already been there and done that for a recent project.

Lux is one great solution, but there is another good one. I did the beam with Tinderbox T_beam. I used the rotating beacon to reveal the client logo and gave it some glow every time the beam passed behind it.

I built the Lighthouse using Zaxwerks Invigorator and a single custom bevel. I threw in some animated sky and Psunami for the water. It worked very well.

Be sure you’re in the set-up area. (click the red ball to get there from the initial scene preview window.) Now be sure you’ve selected the object tab to the right of the set-up window. When you select an object, you’ll see the reload and replace buttons next to the “stats” button. Please note that you will NOT see these buttons if you’re selecting 3D text objects created in Invigorator without using Illustrator art.
