March 17, 2013 at 3:58 pm in reply to: Should I worry about linear workflow (as a photographer)? As far as I understand it, the equivalent of a “linear workflow” in photography would be shooting to JPEGs instead of RAW. Since photography relies on real light, none of it is linear because light is not linear. Instead, light has natural falloff, loses stops over distance, and, unlike the virtual, digital world, can’t be controlled like that.
As far as I’m concerned, “workflow” is a misnomer. “Settings” would be more accurate. To me, a linear workflow would be: I do x, then y, then z, but it specifically refers to developing your 3D graphics using linear light and building gamma into your images. Photography, as a discipline, has filters, lighting techniques, lenses, film stocks, and a whole 150 years worth of techniques to draw upon. 3D graphics really doesn’t because its so new and they naturally believe they have invented a new wheel, but its still just a tool that gets a job done. It’s a shiny new wheel with neat bells and whistles, but its still just a wheel.
If you are having issues with your work and you think you need to change it up, do it, but don’t try to force yourself to do some new catch-phrased technique because a marketing team says you should so they can sell more software. Only do it because it will actually help.
My 2c.

Looks like the talent was shot separate from the background. I say this because the background looks like it was shot with a wide-angle lens and the model looks like she was shot with a longer lens, the lighting for each model/foreground pair don’t match, and my gut says the photographer paired models with backgrounds and shot the models against a green screen or otherwise photoshopped them in. 🙂

March 12, 2013 at 8:27 pm in reply to: Trouble with creating volumetric lighting (a beam of light)Hey, do you have a photo sample you can send?
The easy way is to use a rectangle with a transparent to white gradient. Use Transform (Warp) to curve the item or make it look more round and adjust the opacity to get the right texture. You can also use a 10-15% Gaussian noise (monochrome) with a slight Gaussian blur over the gradient to add some variation. Then adjust the opacity and you might want to add a layer mask to the volumetric light part to fine tune it all. Would love to see it.

Yep, files are too big. 🙁 I would give the same big file advice, but if you are doing a very large poster with graphics, can you assemble it in InDesign? I’m assuming you have ID. Since InDesign is a layout app, it will only link to the files and it supports PSD files and PSD transparency. Point is that you can assemble your files in InDesign rather than have to put it all in Photoshop, then export as either a TIFF for publishing or an Acrobat file or a host of other files.

Steve, that’s a little odd. What version are you using? I’m on CS3 on this machine (its the one I tested it on). I haven’t tested CS6 (it’s at the office), but I add brushes at least every month to some degree and I haven’t seen that. Maybe talk to Adobe?

Sounds like a corrupt file – you may need a rescue app. I advise not doing anything further with the card until you can get it to your machine and find a rescue app of some kind. The only one I’ve used is https://www.cardrescue.com – there are tons of others, but my issue was a bad card so I couldn’t save anything. That’s what I get for using cheap cards I guess.

Ok, so here’s what I did:
Download and unzip the brushes.
Launch Photoshop
Create a new file (I used Photoshop Default) and click the brush tool.
Go to the brushes palette, load your brush ABR file, select one of the brushes, and voila, it looks like it works. The problem is likely a setting on your end or a problem with the download. Try downloading again?
Can you list the exact steps you took?

Can you give the link to where you got the free brushes? I’ll try them out and make sure the problem isn’t the brushes. 🙂

You should be able to use the alpha channel as a mask – just select the alpha channel, copy it, then go to your image, reveal layer mask and paste the alpha channel into your mask. You can invert it if the mask is backwards, too. Then you can save as a photoshop file, PNG, or some other format that supports transparency.
