Sorry, Chris–I’ve never used one of the Canons. If it can downconvert over FireWire, then it should be a similar setup.

In your camera, navigate to the in/out menu and roll down to “i.Iink conversion”. Choose “on”.

Now, in the same menu, choose “Component” and make sure that it’s set to “1080i/480i”.

OK, so now you’ve got regular old DV being output through the FireWire jack, and 1080i video being output through the component break-out cable.

Plug the camera into a FireWire port on the G5, and the component video cable to the Kona (love those RCA to BNC adapters!)

IN FCP open the capture window. Click on the Capture Settings tab and you’ll have two drop-down menus. For Device Control, choose “FireWire NTSC”. For Capture/Input, choose whatever your capture card is and the format you want to capture to. There should be a preset for DVCPROHD 1080i60 or similar with the Kona.

Now, you will also have to feed audio to the Kona card from the camera in order to capture sound.

Once this is all connected and set up, FCP will control the camera just like you were capturing DV. But you won’t be capturing DV, you’ll be capturing DVCPROHD and the TC will carry over from the camera to the QT files perfectly.

    I hope that helps.

This same configuration works for capturing video through an Analog to HD-SDI box. Just FYI.

Like you said, you’re just using the “HDV->DV” downconverting for deck control. The video outputs should remain untouched.

In the render que click on the Render Settings to bring up the dialogue box. In there, under “Time Sampling” is a drop-down menu for Field Rendering. Since your comp will be 24fps (or 23.98), you’ll want to add 3:2 pulldown to bring it up to 30fps (29.97). Turn Field Rendering to Lower, then enable 3:2 pulldown “WSSWW. Check the right side of the window in the Frame Rate box to verify that the radio button labeled “Use this frame rate: 29.97” is selected.

You should be good to go.

Pretty sure it was just Apple’s Keynote.

You can export QT movies of the presentations with it.

    Good luck!

  • Without seeing your footage for myself…

You can probably just key out the sky in your footage.

So, just duplicate the layer with the sky/trees and apply a keying effect (Keylight, color key or luma key).

Once the sky is removed, then just place your spaceship between those footage layers and the trees should appear on top of the ship.

    Good luck!

    Man, I feel your pain.

    Mine broke off, too.

I repaired it using a toothpick!

I just cut the very tip of the toothpick off, and superglued it to the door. Then, you insert the toothpick end to the DSR-11 first, and then the end that is still intact second. Click!

The wood of the toothpick can “squish” a little so it doesn’t have to be a perfect fit!

Well, at least it worked for me…

    Good luck!
