Yeah, now that you mention it… I remeber reading something about the new Twixtor advantages in time remapping. I’ll check them both out. It’d be a great bonus for the skate vids with pyrotechnics that we’ve been shooting.

I too just started working with maya for these type of applications in video. The Visual quickstart guide has been invaluable for learning the program. However, you may be a ble to get more specific stepped instructions for your particular thing by asking on Maya’s community board.

    elvis,
do you get paid for all the help you give people with this program?

Wondertouch should give you a percentage check for each person you referr to their product.

    Or, did you invent it?

  • I’m not an “expert” so disregard this if you want, but…. videomaker magazine put out an article about lighting in last month’s issue. It delt with those low budget specials too.

the article was called “Color Temperature Strategies” by Jim Stinson. He recomends a site which sells 5000k screw in fluorescent lights http://www.equipmentemporioum.com

The previous month also had a reference to building a cheap lighting set out of building contractor lights.

I think you should be able to pick up the back issues at your local libray or order them off the web.

I’d be interested in seeing this when it’s done. Did you use a tennis ball or something for a frame of reference in hand? It sounds like your actors are on screen for a length of time. If you use Elvis’s suggestion and some quick (or DBZ slipt screen) reaction cuts, you could easily avoid the absurd trail lag and also the particle’s death. It might also allow you to switch the emitter from a glowing ball to a burning sun before ejecting it at the foe. That could save you some processing time.

Oh, Dude, sorry for the double post. Here’s another possibility. Create an emitter of the shape you want blocked and simply layer it in on top. Easy. Sorry bout the earlier complex answer.

Well, dude. You’re sunk. J/K you can add points to create the curves on the corners, but if you’re looking for a way to “soften the edges”, hmmm.
It might be best to do the compositing of your project layers outside of the particle illusion program. As you have noticed the blocker function simply adds a masking layer on top of your emmiter. If you can export your animation prior to the addition of the blocker, save the images in a folder named layer one, or something. Then go and add your blocker for visual reference in PI and continue to create your layered effect. When you export next, hide everything below the blocker and export the images to a folder called “layer two.” Use After Effects or some other compositing software that has keying capabilities to combine the two with a softened alpha shape inserted between (on top of “layer one” and under “layer two”). An easy way to do this is with a nested composition using a garbage matte or the like in the Adobe products. Most other Vid comp edit programs have something like this too. Seems like a lot of work but it really isn’t. Do it about five or six times and you won’t even think about it anymore.

I found it for you… Download the emitter library “alan_01_08” from the Wondertouch website. It has the Time-Lapse Clouds emmiter in it. It’s pretty fast but you can tweak it slower if need be.
