Hey Matt,
No problem. I spent the better part of two days trying to track this answer down as I had the card, the computer, the RAM and CS5 and the hardware just wouldn’t kick in.
To download the CUDA 3.0 drivers you can go here:
https://developer.nvidia.com/object/cuda_3_0_downloads.html
Read the “Getting Started Guides” for your OS and you should be able to figure it out. I am on the Mac platform and only downloaded the top two in the mac section which is the “Developer Drivers” and “Toolkit”. After you installed them and boot up Premiere the little Graphic Card lego piece should be filled in and the yellow bar should be there for you.
I hope that helps. Good luck!

I also got a GTX 285 card and when I installed it, the playback engine would not work with the hardware. since you have not responded I will assume you have already figured it out, but if anyone else reads this, you must not only install the drivers, but the CUDA development kit as well in order for Premiere to take advantage of it. 🙂

Ok, I lied. Stupid me I should have realized a still image isn’t going to show the issues I am having. I will see if I can get a video upload link to it before the end of the day. Thanks in advance all!

Thanks Bob!
I love the humor laced with wisdom. 🙂
I never really thought RAID was something I needed to invest in, what got me thinking about it was that in almost every post I read on here a good chunk of people mention it in their rigs. While I am no where near to owning a professional studio/rig I wanted to make sure I was building right. 🙂
The price tag on it was high even with the “cheap” methods and even then I am sure you get what you pay for. 🙂
I will keep away from it for now and hopefully I won’t need it any time soon. Thanks so much!

June 4, 2010 at 6:35 pm in reply to: Exporting from Motion 4 to Premiere Pro CS5 with AlphaLet me clarify a bit more and hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction.
When I export the file from Motion and drop it in the timeline of Premiere, it shows up just fine in my workspace.
However when I render the section with the lower 3rd, or export the sequence, the lower 3rd looses its transparency and covers up the talent. Here is what it looks like when I shrink it down just a bit so you can see the problem a bit more clearly.
Again, I really do apologize for what is probably a really dumb question, but I have never used Premiere before and am trying my best to find materials and help in other sources as well so any help anyone can offer would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Michael,
Thanks for the reply ( and sorry for the long delay in answering).
I sadly do not have a tower to have an AJA/Black Magic card. I am stuck on an iMac for the moment so my only means of out putting is vi FW to a SONY HDV/DVCAM deck.
Do you have any other suggestions?

Ugh, so I installed Vegas Pro 9.0d trial….
I am sure there are people who can make this program sing…but this is like going from speaking English to Russian or some other non-latin language. I feel so lost and there are not any common commands for exporting. All I can find is printing to tape. Ugh..will have to keep digging…..

Thanks Michael!
Isn’t Automatic Duck more of a tool for importing editing the XML or EDL or what have you? I really don’t the whole thing as I am doing the main compilation and they are just providing me with 30sec – 1min spots that I drop into my timeline.
He started sending me .avi files and they looked pretty bad so I wanted to make sure he was exporting them right so I can import them.
I am going to play around with a demo of VEGAS tonight and see what it can do for me.
If I am totally wrong about duck, let me know. 🙂

That sounds like a good thing. 🙂
All the SONY site says is “Quick Time Format Support” which is not so helpful.
However I found that they let you download a trial version of VEGAS so I can put that on my PC rig and see what my export options are and will post it back on here incase anyone else is searching for this. 🙂

April 28, 2010 at 4:09 pm in reply to: Apple Policy on new Macbook Pros hurting FCS UsersMy first editing computer was the black PowerBook G3 when Final Cut was 1.0 on OS 9 and it helped me pay my way through college when I bought it back in ’98 when I was in HS. Since then I have always had a preference for portability but in the last year I have finally started to really edit in earnest and I find myself more and more wishing I had a tower since I am stuck on my MacBookPro and iMac.
To the original poster’s point, Apple’s portable line just doesn’t seem like it is meant for hard core editing. Using Motion on a battery on a 17″? Man that drains a battery faster than a parched man finding a glass of water.
I am flying to NJ next week to finally meet my biggest client face to face and work with their lighting and camera crew to help speed up production and what not and I wish I could bring a tower with me to do things a lot faster.
Anyway, that is just my 2 cents. 🙂
