  • Exporting from SONY Vegas to FCP 7

    Hello all!

My client’s in house editor just purchased SONY Vegas 9.0d for the initial edits on his Win7x64 setup. I know nothing about VEGAS other than that it doesn’t play nice with Final Cut.

My basic question is what is the best way for him to export his footage to me for dropping in my workflows. The footage is SD 720×480 NTSC and the final output I do is SD broadcast. We have a massive FTP site for transferring files and we often overnight drives back and forth.

I edit in ProRes 422 for SD as I master it out for digital FTP, DVCAM and DVD and like to have the best quality I can.

If I need to provide any other information please let me know. Thanks in advance all!

Not sure when or if it’s already happened, but at NAB Sony announced support for ProRes in Vegas… that would be the ticket. Otherwise, Photo JEPG is likely the only file format both systems understand other than using the animation codec (UGH).

That sounds like a good thing. 🙂

All the SONY site says is “Quick Time Format Support” which is not so helpful.

However I found that they let you download a trial version of VEGAS so I can put that on my PC rig and see what my export options are and will post it back on here incase anyone else is searching for this. 🙂

Apart from finding a codec that both systems are happy with, the process of transfering sequence info was discussed here recently. You could search the forum for that but my recollection was that Vegas>AAF>Automatic Duck>FCP was considered the only way.

I have sucessfully imported from AVID to FCP using Automatic Duck, but I have no idea if that works with a Vegas AAF. AAF is supposed to be a standard interchange, but it has been developed by the same people who originally did OMF, so I have my doubts that it is totally solid.

    Thanks Michael!

Isn’t Automatic Duck more of a tool for importing editing the XML or EDL or what have you? I really don’t the whole thing as I am doing the main compilation and they are just providing me with 30sec – 1min spots that I drop into my timeline.

He started sending me .avi files and they looked pretty bad so I wanted to make sure he was exporting them right so I can import them.

I am going to play around with a demo of VEGAS tonight and see what it can do for me.

If I am totally wrong about duck, let me know. 🙂

No mention of Vegas specifically but AAF import from AVID is mentioned

Ugh, so I installed Vegas Pro 9.0d trial….

I am sure there are people who can make this program sing…but this is like going from speaking English to Russian or some other non-latin language. I feel so lost and there are not any common commands for exporting. All I can find is printing to tape. Ugh..will have to keep digging…..

Often in trial & demo versions the main thing they cripple is export functions.

    Hi Michael,

Did you get anywhere to the Vegas to FCP? I had a similiar issue last year and found it quicker to reconstruct the (50minute)program cut by cut. Now my worst nightmare has returned – the client extended the original Vegas version (it was a doco) by 30 minutes and wants it redone, I’m back to square one.
