July 9, 2009 at 12:50 pm in reply to: After installing V13 (trial) hardware not recognizedThanks Floh, just seconds after releasing the send button for my post, I realized that 13.0.4 is brand new and that the release notes for V13 weren’t updated. I will try the 6.04. drivers. But, man, you’re fast when answering!
,thanks again

I’ve no experience with Avid (old or new) just some with FCP and extensively with Media100Hd and 844/x systems. But rebuilding a project from tape is impossible on a file level, I think. What would be possible is to redigitize a timeline (edit) from tapes, if the original ingest (or digitizing) was done with proper timecoding and reel naming. In the case of redigitizing from tape a timeline made with P2 ingested clips, the relationship (timecode wise) between the P2 footage and the tape copies must be flawless, otherwise you’re doooooomed.
Hope this helped,

Hai Floh,
thanks for your quick reply, about the import; of course so simple, just dumb that I didn’t think of it, i’ll try it at once.
About the codecs, I know everybopdy his own codec, it’s just that a NLE is a strong as its supported codecs, and I think JPEG2000 is a strong codec, especially with the processors being so fast at the moment. I’m looking for ways of avoiding the sometimes painstakingly slow imports of P2 files. And the Elite HD looks like a way out (with increased quality). I will contact M100 directly with my question, what would be the best way to do this in your opinion? I have written to them before on antother issue, but didn’t get any reaction, though. Is there someone in charge of user input or something?Much appreciated,
cheers

Me again, I just noticed that you’re not shooting HD, so the panasonic AJ-SPD850 will also work (again a P2 recorder/player but no HD on this), and in SD time maybe an ever bigger issue (playout time vs. P2 ingesting). But I thought maybe it helps anyway, demo version for sale here

I understand your predicament here, I suppose the time isn’t there to first copy the P2 to tape and then ingest tapes (instead p2 cards) ? Another solution might be getting a Panasonic AJ-HPM110 or AJ-HPS1500 (P2 player/recorders) with a TC out and playing these to tape then ingest P2 in NLE. This would probably mean you’ll need twice the amount of P2 cards, (thus a lot of money to get the cards en recorders) since you’ll at least double (probably triple) the time to free up your cards for shooting.
The I can only think of ‘recreating’ the P2 cards in your NLE by putting all the shots in shooting order (if you didn’t shoot in free-running TC or delete a lot of clips on site)in a sequence an dump these to tapes. (also a lot room for errors here).
Is timecode consistency really important for your client? I mean will they use your logfiles or will they recut your sequences ? Otherwise timecode is maybe not such a big issue for them….
Good luck with all this

Thanks Floh, all formats except the native ones are being supported, from own experience. We shoot now 1080i (no native option there) and also 720p (there’s is an option to shoot native). We would like to shoot native because it frees up half of your P2 card, given the price and availability of these cards, it would mean a lot for P2 users, i think.

I don’t think it’s a matter of distracting them. First of all, I think it’s a justified request since M100 has supported the P2 format from the beginning and why not follow it up by offering the complete codec-set.
By the way any idea how many HVX-200, HPX-500(555) and other HPX’s are sold (2000/3000 etc)?
Secondly, this could substantiate a serious user-base as well, ever more because M100 was the first (at least earlier than Avid en FCP) that supported P2 (from the first producerversion on) I have the feeling that coorperation from panasonic could also be better than sony, but hey that’s only me talking here, how many PannyP2/m100 users are out there? I’m sure it is, but with the possibility of creating groups of bins and programs within M100 projects, I also like to organize these files in the same way in the finder. As you can imagine with huge projects, the amount of bins and programs are quite large. Some form of file management should be possible,

Yeah, sort of, but i’ve killed the audio on the Mac, but I still i’m hearing things 🙂
I’m under the impression that it is the M100 hardware ‘doubling’ the sound, because when i turn the audio down on the speakers , all sound is gone. So it must coming from the m100 hardware, a bit annoying because i kinda like listening to the interviews while there being digitized.John Twigt
