July 8, 2007 at 4:44 pm in reply to: Audio doubling while digitizing

Settings are straightforward: Audio sync to SDI 1, output to AES/EBU 1-2. (Enable System Sound Device is NOT ticked)
(audio and video) Input Firewire SD.

When I use the SDI (audio & video) input, i have no problem.

AES/EBU output goes through Flying Cow converter to speakers.

(remember I’m using HDx hardware, same setup with Kona HDe hardware has no problem)

    Anybody any ideas?

I won’t get into the details of your squeeze problem, but if the problem arose with the quicktime upgrade, why don’t you downgrade to the previous version of quicktime?

It can be bit of an hassle but you can find some tips via Google. There is a thread with apple about this:

June 25, 2007 at 8:34 pm in reply to: Anybody any experience with a Firestore?

    Thanks for the reply,
I have one more question though; with regards to quality, what will give the best results? ; When shooting with a Panasonic DVX-100: recording a DV-stream in quicktime or recording a DVCPRO50 in P2 format?
I know the recording normally takes place on a DV tape, but will the imagesignal somehow be sampled after it ‘leaves’ the chips to be recorded. I suppose so, but is it at the firewire bus not ‘just’ a DV signal. And therefore recording a DVCPRO50 codec is just a useless upgrading of the signal.
I don’t know if i use the exact terminology , but i hope you all get my question.

Basically : is it possible to get a higher end signal from the firewire connector than a DV stream (4.2.0 PAL) ?

(maybe this the wrong forum, if so i apologize and will post this in another forum if needed, please let me know)

Thanks Floh, for the response. One other question; it’s also possible to ‘record’ in DVCPro50 codec in P2 MXF format on the firestore. Is that any quicker with respect to having the material ready to edit in the editing machine? I have no experience whatsover with the P2 format on the media100. I know it is possible, but how does it work? Do you have any working experience with this format?

Ich danke dir im voraus (my german is a little rusty, sorry)

Maybe I’m missing something here, but isn’t the camera capable of shooting 1080p in 30 frames? I have been shooting (with sony not panasonic) in 1080p (25 frames) and the workflow was a no-brainer. Perfect editing and perfect downconverting to PALmasters. No sweat. 🙂

March 5, 2007 at 4:18 pm in reply to: Thinking about buying an HDe – Anyone using it??

-How well does the HDe work for creating dvds? Currently I’m exporting my media 100 programs out as reference to compressor (after a longish render) and mpeging that way. Final Cut seems a tad better in this area – or faster, at least (could be that screaming fast Mac Pro, of course!). –

I work with HDe and compressor/dvdsp. Works fine, export by ref, and mpeg in compressor. I have an G5 Quad, and it is fast, about the same speed as exporting from FCP. No real speed difference there. Just take care with the installation of compressor, DON”T use standard installation from FCP on the the same OS, create two partitions (or 2 disks) one with OS and M100 software and the other with FCP. Install compressor separately (solo) on the M100 partition.

-Does HDe handle multiple tracks of video as FCP? This is essential, I think.-

It does, it depends on your computer and the codec, i am able to play 6 tracks of 10-bit uncompressed video realtime (no fx, no cc)

-Do HDe’s effects (dissolves, blurs, color correction) work in real time or do they need to be rendered? How does it compare to FCP in this respect? On the Mac Pro FCP is quite amazing with this stuff I must say, and so I’m hoping the universal binary HDe (when it comes out) will offer similar performance.-

Downside here, M100 needs to render color correction and effects, ALL of them, can take a while. With FCP you get a huge amount of realtime fx (at least on my QUAD)

-Has anyone used it with Producer? I would really love to be able to take projects home with me to work on a laptop (or make small changes without having to drive back into the city). This is a pretty huge advantage to FCP.-

Producer works seemless, however amount of realtime tracks drop when using Powerbook of course, also the amount of disks to carry along can be a hassle. But i switch regurarly between my Company and my home with projects, by just carrying a FW disk home, sweeeeet.

-And the BIGGEST QUESTION: Do you guys feel that Media 100 is serious about continuing to support these products? They doe seem to be revitalized these days and I hope the bug fixes and improvements will continue.-

Nobody knows of course, but it feels good now (at least compared to the OPTIBASE people)

    Good luck with your decision.

March 4, 2007 at 4:56 pm in reply to: HD Suite

I have a HDx (based on the ‘old’ media100 board an BO-box) running 11.5 and it does that. It also can (realtime) make your SD letterbox or anamorph (or a ‘homemade’ aspect ratio) while upscaling. I suppose the new HD suite (with KONA hardware ) does that, it at least is stated on their website. see here
