[Matte] “You must keep everything that is “important” (especially Titles) well-within the “safe area” so that those images will be seen (and not cut off) on MOST standard TV’s.”

    That’s midly misleading, though correct.

Just to clear it up, when you turn on the ‘Show Title Safe’ option in the view menu, you’ll be presented with TWO green boxes. Picture safe is when you keep all the important elements of your picture inside the OUTER box, but in order to make sure you never crop off titles etc, you must keep them inside the INNER green box (Title Safe).

So though Mattes comment was accurate, just in case, I thought it best to throw in my twopence worth. (I write from experience, working with someone who thought the outer was title safe, and the inner one was there as guide for text height!)

  • Unfortunately, though I pounced on your reply hoping it was the elixr I needed… alas, no.

Like I said in the last post, it seems that if I set it to 8-bit, it works fine, so that (to me) means it’s nothing to do with setups, nor is it a setting in the preferences unfortunately.

I’ve contacted the reseller and BM about it, and wait, hoping that someone knows the problem.

    Thanks for the advice though.

  • So – continuing to wonder what the heck is going on – and now I’ve stumbled upon something new (hence the third post in here) – and that’s this:

If I set the Capture/Input to Blackmagic PAL 8 bit (instead of 10 bit) it now works.

So I seem to have lost 10 Bit support on my card.

    Anyone have an idea?

    Anyone?

    Bueller?

  • So, I’m still looking at what’s going on here. Sorry for the two posts, but as the ‘Cow’ doesn’t let you edit posts, it’s the only way.

    1) The monitor I use is a HD/SD monitor with an autoswitcher (when it gets an SD signal, it goes to 576/50i – when it gets a HD signal, it auto switches to 1080i/50) Still going directly into the decklink card (rather than using the Multibridge, which doesn’t make any difference anyway) – when I go to capture mode, the monitor automatically switches to HD! (I’m capturing SD from a DigiBeta). That’s odd…

(The Audio/Video settings are set to how they’ve always been, Blackmagic 10bit Pal)

    2) The BlackMagic software comes with a couple of programmes, one of which is Blackmagic Deck Control. I guess this is for people who don’t have Final Cut Pro etc for capturing. This is just like a little capture window of its own. I get deck control through it, and can capture with it. And, the reason I bring this up is that I CAN see video when I use this – so this means that video IS coming in through the Decklink card, and it must (well, I say must) be a FCP problem.

I can’t remember what my sig says about the system, but it’s OSX 10.4.8 and FCP 5.0.4.

    Thanks again.

    Hi,

I know different people who have different views on what an L – trim is, so please excuse me if this description isn’t what you mean – but if you’re just asking about L-cuts and J-cuts, then turn off the ‘Linked selection’ option (Shift L), so you can adjust the Video and Audio tracks independantly, and then use the roll tool (just press R once) to be able to trim the video/audio back and forth to create the L or J cut.

Let me know if this isn’t your particular flavour of L-Trim, and I (or someone who knows a lot more than me) will help.

I still think one of the big shames of all of this is when the client goes for the guy with bad tools, who can’t do the job – just because he’s cheaper.

So, rather than go to an expert with the tools that will do the job brilliantly, they go to the guy that builds the house using reclaimed wood and rusty nails. And then they’re surprised when it falls down…

But, great vid – thanks for posting it.

    Ah – right.

No – that’s why I was asking. I wasn’t sure if you were saying the Kona was the problem, the 1200 was the problem, or just simply that you couldn’t use Rs422 (which, I really didn’t think you were saying).

My other Panasonic decks work fine though (AJD750’s) if that’s any help.

Thanks for clearing it up though.

    Hi Walter,

Is that ‘It doesn’t work with RS422’ statement based on the OP’s output hardware and/or deck?

I use Blackmagic’s Multibridge and Decklink – and RS-422 control works just fine controlling any of the decks in my facility for Edit to tape.

Well, I say just fine… still get that one frame error…

Just wondered what that related to, thanks for reading.

Yeah, +1 on that – this only ever happens to me on Insert edits.

(I only ever mark the in on the edit window – never the out – and it still happens, so unfortunately, that isn’t the root of the problem).

This is the bane of my life – and it always happens from nowhere, at the most crucial moment – and above all is probably the reason I am most embarrassed when using Final Cut Pro with clients in the suite.

    Fixes that I’ve tried are

    1) Extend the in and outpoints to cover a much larger time span (70% hit rate)

    2) Restart your Mac (70% hit rate)

    3) Trash the preferences (which annoys the heck out of me) (90% hit rate)

    4) Copy and paste the edit into a new sequence and cut that sequence in (10% hit rate)

    5) Cut some other stuff back into tape, and then return to this edit again, hoping it’s happier now (5% hit rate).

This has been a problem for all versions of FCP I’ve used – I really hope they sort this out on the next release.
